1st USCG Offshore Cutter construction begins

Construction starts on first US Coast Guard offshore patrol cutter
Construction on the first ship in a new class of US Coast Guard cutters started with a steel cutting ceremony at Eastern Shipbuilding Groups facilities in Panama City, Florida, on January 7.
The steel cutting for offshore patrol cutter (OPC) Argus (WMSM-915) was a significant milestone for the company even after it sustained damage and work interruption due to Hurricane Michael.
The cutting of steel will start the fabrication and assembly of the cutters hull, and ESG is to complete keel laying of Argus later this year.
Additionally, ESG completed the placement of orders for all long lead time materials for the second cutter, Chase (WMSM-916).

It's not much bigger than a dishwasher, but the Leonardo DRS permanent magnet motor, used for years to power oil rigs, will help propel the Coast Guard's new offshore patrol cutter, or OPC.
The Arlington, Virginia-based company was awarded a $10.7 million contract in 2017 to furnish nine hybrid electric drive systems for the Heritage-class OPC, the first of which is under construction in Panama City, Florida, by Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
Leonardo DRS is currently building its second system for the second OPC, the Chase, even as Eastern Shipbuilding just began cutting steel in January for the first ship in the class, the Argus.

Eastern Shipbuilding opens new C5I integration facility for offshore patrol cutter
By Megan Eckstein
Thursday, Oct 21

PANAMA CITY, Fla. Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Northrop Grumman and their industry partners formally opened a test and integration center this week for the C5I systems at the heart of the U.S. Coast Guards new offshore patrol cutter program.

This OPC production facility is meant to reduce risk on what the Coast Guard calls its top acquisition priority. Within mockups of the bridge, the operations center and other key rooms, every piece of internal and external sensing and communications equipment will be networked together in this facility at Easterns Allanton yard first, tested for any integration hiccups and then sent up the road to the companys Nelson Street yard where the OPC hulls are being constructed.
