Nice job! I I am pretty sure I have a plethora of 1/350 brass, and that includes some p/e catapult bits.... If you'd like, I will see what I have, (if you wish to add more detail to your catapults).
Thanks to Chad, as I have not investigated this part of the model. Well, now I know what I have in store for me.

I'm not really looking forward to adding those same catapults on my 1/700 Alaska

I try very hard not to think about THAT

I bought the Corsair Armada 20mm guns with resin pedestals. That means I have 3 pieces to glue on each guns!!

That's probably the last thing I'll be doing on the model.

Great work on the camouflage Kym!! I almost finished the same pattern myself and I found it to be very challenging. It's not easy figuring out what to paint in black from the few pictures available on the internet.

I noticed something on the starboard side of the ship. There should be another black band on the hull in between the fore and aft band. (sorry not very good at explaining

) It goes approximately where the pattern on the forward superstructure is. You can see it clearly in the photo archive on the main page. There is a section about the Alaska class. This thingy is missing from the Floating drydock sheet.

And also check out the starboard side of the funnel on this same sheet. There is a black square extending to the right of the pattern about midway up the funnel. It's almost aligned with the "D" on the camouflage sheet. It's a bit hard to see because it is behind the crane post.

Can't wait to see some more progress pics of your build! It's already looking great!!!! On a side note, what paint are you using for this project?

You know, I have been looking at that area thinking that there should be something in it. The silly thing is that I have the port and starboard photos of her blow up right in front of me but worked only off the Floating Drydock pattern. Doh!!! I feel like a real Homer. As for the superstructure markings, I havn't finished them by a long shot. I just got carried away with the black paint to see what it looked like continued upwards. I have got to straighted all the edges and paint the areas that are missing yet.
As always, paints are Colourcoats but this time I used the Humbrol matt black, I liked it better.

Ah the good 'ol Humbrol paint! If only they made colors for the navy that would make me a very happy sailor!! On my Alaska I'm using the ModelMaster paints and while they work great, I feel that they go on a bit heavy compared to the Humbrol brand. But maybe it's because I work in 1/700 on this project.

I'll try my hand again with colourcoats on another project. I haven't have luck with those paints on my 1/400 Heller Hood. I painted the anti-fouling red and after 48 hours the paint was still sticky to the touch and very gloss looking. I stirred and shacked a lot before using but it was still the same. I was able to completely remove the paint by "painting" some thinner on the hull and wiping with a cloth afterward.

What is your technique with these paints to get those results? I only brush paint my models and I can't help but feel that I'm doing something wrong with these paints because a lot of people get awesome results!

I airbrush where I can. On the Alaska, I hand painted the black and the antifouling red, mainly because I was too lazy to mix another batch. I'll probably have to hand paint the deck now that I have added the camo stripes to the superstructure, cause I'm definately not going to mask all those walls.

With Colourcoats and using a brush- if the brush "catches" in any way while painting, I'll add a few drops of thinners to the tin and mix well. Airbrushing, I mix 50/50.

She looks great Kym - you are certainly making lots of progress on her. IMO, the Alaska-class are the best looking USN ships from WW2.

I like the way the camo came out - nice work (though personally I think the 3 color scheme on the Guam is more attractive).

Fellow Alaska Fans, here's a bit of an update. I am slowly getting the ol' girl into shape. I'm just about to start the railing. I even started on it's dio base. As you can see by the photos, I drawn the docks and cut out 3 of the 4 slots for the vessels. Alaska is not sitting down to where she is supposed to yet and Ive decided not to cut out the tugs shapes, instead I'm going to cut them at waterline. This ones going to be a long project, thats for sure.

Wow Kym, talk about a fast build!!! I started the 1/700 version several months ago and you've managed to get ahead of me big time in about half the time I took!

Your Alaska is really coming along nicely. I'm looking forward to the next update from you.

What dio are you making exactly? Is it taken from the internet picture where you see the Alaska and Missouri sid by side at a dock?

No mate, that uncut slot is for the USS Pittsburg and the others are a Liberty ship being loaded and a sub being replentished. That was why all the questions about dock cranes ect. You'll notice the outlines for the buildings down the center of each warf and on each side of them are the tracks for the big cranes. I'm just stocking up on Evergreen and waiting for the ISW train set to arrive at the moment before I start the dock.

Have you ever thought about doing a little write up about how you do your bases? I like to build my ships full hull, and I like your idea of keeping them that way and putting them into a scene like that. Are they removeable for static display after all is said and done? Wonderful work!
