Professional CAD design advice

just out of curiocity, i want to start learning one of those 3d packages available in the market , but i would like some advise as to which one is better for what, and what is currently needed most by the market.Thinking of building a smal portofolio mainly of ship models few houses, planes etc.

Not sure about in the UK, but AutoCAD is the industry standard for most CAD work. It is expensive, but the skills you learn will make you more in demand on the job market. Version 6 now includes some IGES in and out abilities so you can exchange info with most other formats.

If your employer allows you can always install the copy you use at home. The license agreement allows for that as long as both seats can not operate at the same time. The new versions also have to be activated so you better have a legal copy. I found years ago that it was better to own my version for tax reasons.

If you want to build "virtual ships" you should try Rhino. There are some demo downloads on their site, I believe, and the full version is not that expensive as AutoCad.
