HMS Gloucester 1910

Hello all, I am just about to start Combrig's 1/700 HMS Gloucester and as usual with Combrig, there are no colour guides.

I would like to build her as in the Home Fleet or in the Mediterranean Fleet. I have Colourcoats GW02, 03 and 04 grey paints and am minded to paint the main hull GW02 (#2 Grey) as HMS Dreadnought had these colours pre-1913 as per the Sovereign Hobbies website in their camoflage and markings guide,

Do you think I would be far wrong if I followed that guidance? I have seen the pictures of the Museum Model in the Calling all WW1 RN Town class Light Cruiser Fans section, but am unsure of the shade of grey.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello George, I am thinking of 1910 as she was commissioned now, when she was in the Home Fleet, which I think should be Colourcoats GW02 #2 Grey. As the boxing said it was 1910, and my references are a bit thin on the ground I will go with that. I do not think they (the Bristol tranche of Town Class Cruisers) were modified much pre-war.

I have found that one piece of etch is drawn in the instructions but not supplied, but I can hopefully make that part from card (it is a boat rack aft which is between two deckhouses) and also make up a cork liferaft for it too.

The "1910" on the box is only a reference when the ship was completed. Combrig uses this information only to define which ship is depicted, not in which time frame the ship is depicted.

I think that the kit can be used to built Gloucester at any time point of her career - the modifications were very limited. For an early war fit, no and only minor modifications are necessary. E.g. both hunting SMS Goeben and Battle of Jutland should be possible.

I did a review of the Bristol class located here: viewtopic.php?f=84&t=154204/ I copied from the NMM plans of HMS Bristol the missing parts. As for colour in 1910 GW05 is very close. Look in the RN Grey thread above for more detail.

George, thank you for that. I will look through the thread you mentioned (again!) and see if I can work something out. I am glad you (or other contributors) have put in some Humbrol equivalents, that will be useful.
