Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Gents, I have no doubt asked this question before but...................................does anyone have or know where one can get (or - wishful thinking - view on-line) a copy of the Bucknell Report (into PoW's loss)?; other than going in person to the archives in the UK (which of course besides me not living in the UK, I wouldn't be going there now under current 'circumstances' even if I could).
PS. Hoping all are staying safe (or as safe as can be) in these troubled times!

Try contacting Dr. GH (Harry) Bennett at University of Plymouth - he cites the Bucknill Committee reports in his book The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity, so might have copies of it.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Hi all.
i'm starting to detail and correct the turrets of my 1945 KGV rendition.
I already corrected the B turret roof as per pictures and plans, now it's time to start working on the rear o the turrets.
lot of doubts and questions here..
There is a number of...hatches? vent covers? whatever? on the rear side of the turrets, but plans are not according to pictures and pictures are not according to...other pictures.
Both the plans from Kagero publishing and profile morskie shows an arrangement of these "things" that is fairly different from what Eduard provides in the PE set, and this part differs in size and shape from what can be seen in pictures.
All the following pictures are taken from the IWM site, and the attribution to kgv is almost certain.
In the first picture you can see these "hatches" with a sort of round handle-bump on the upper part. they seem to be fairy thin. (1941 circa)

as better shown in this picture (a turret? 1941 circa)
in this picture they seem to be somewhat different

fourth picture: it appears that the hatces now seems to be like "rails". (1943?)

the next pictures are from 1944 royal family visit, as the two video stills.
disaster here.
in the picture with Princess Elizabeht there is clearly a rail and not a hatch, both in the lower and upper rows.
in the video stills (first one Y turret?) there is the evidence of a prominent...vent cover? hatch? tobacco vending machine? alien egg nest? that is visible even on the rear of the B turret in the second video still (link to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtpExntbt1o )

are there any better images or any hint about this detail?
many thanks in advance

There is a pattern of vent holes in the rear 7" armour.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
so those panels are covers for the vent holes. thank you for the information. Now it's time to figure out the exact pattern of these covers for 1945
it will be fun, but i have time...here the lockdown is officially prolonged until the 13 of april...at least.

Well, I got hold of Mr Bennett, but unfortuntely no luck, he did not have a copy and could only suggest IWM or Nat Arch.Timmy C wrote:Try contacting Dr. GH (Harry) Bennett at University of Plymouth - he cites the Bucknill Committee reports in his book The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity, so might have copies of it.
Oh well, que sera, sera.
But again, THANKS for trying Tim!
Oh, and thanks for posting pic of open twin turret EJ.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Seeking conformation of the presence or absence of a heat shield at the searchlight platform level of KGV's aft funnel.
If present, it would be similar to the heat shield on the forward funnel shown in the photo below.
TIA!

I only found one good shot of the rear of the aft funnel that shows DoY's funnel post war without shielding.

Behind the searchlight you mean? Yes, appears so, I was too focused on the rear...

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
Thanks for the help! Photos I have access to showing KGV's aft funnel seem to indicate that she did not have an aft funnel heat shield but the photos are poor and I may be wrong.
Below are the best photos I have showing the aft funnel. It is hard to make out any heat shield on the aft funnel in this photo: The next photo shows a bit of a horizontal shadow that may be the top edge of a heat shield(?). The faint shadow is a thin line visible just above the top of the temporary shelter on the front of the searchlight platform. The photo, otherwise excellent, is not clear enough to confirm that what we see is actually a heat shield and if so, its extents.
There may be two heat shields, one forward and another aft, with a gap between them. There appears to be another faint shadow line visible just beyond the searchlight, in line with the forward shadow line. If what we are seeing is (are) a heat shield(s), maybe it is similar to the heat shield seen in the DoY photo EJ posted?
Thoughts?

Yes, sure does, heat shield similar if not identical to DoY. PoW, too.
Thanks EJ!!

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
from IWM, this is marked as KGV in 1941.

the heat shielding is clearly visible, and it appears to be a continuous plate.

No, IMO you are right as to the the pics you posted. That is, there appears to be no shield shown in those photos, or none directly behind the searchlight as some other poster's pics show.ModelMonkey wrote:Photos I have access to showing KGV's aft funnel seem to indicate that she did not have an aft funnel heat shield but the photos are poor and I may be wrong.

Re: Calling all HMS King George V class (WWII) fans
actually, in the second picture you posted the shielding is there, even if we can see only a subtile line.
perspective and light are not helping us, but i'm 95% positive that the shielding is there.
Other pictures show the shielding in that position, and it's unlikely that they were removed from KGV after the war (picture you posted is from 1946-47) but retained on DOY and Anson (as shown in picture of the latter 2 ships mothballed).
The picture from 1941 i posted just a couple of posts above is quite clear in showing a complete plate, but even from this angle the upper edges are barely visible.
So i think that the thin line that we can see in your pictures can be our beloved shield (useful to cook bacon and eggs for breakfast, i believe
)
just my 2 cent
