Great review, Dan. That certainly is a beautiful kit...I will definitely be adding it to my stash when/if normal overseas air freight is re-established. I also really appreciate the background history on the other available Kagero kits. (Should I really be surprised that the Aoshima kit scales too small? ) Question, Dan: based on your examination of the new PR Kagero sprues, does it seem likely that a late war version will be forthcoming as well?

What would you suggest for PE detailing - some generic IJN railings and ladders? I'm going to forget about trying to put hand-railing on turrets and torpedo launchers. Seeing as it's Flyhawk produced, it needs little to no parts replacements.

Thank, Greg.

I would think so, given both Pit-road's history of offering variants, and the great result of this partnership. The bridge, bridge roof, aft deckhouse and main deck have all been molded separately, and these are the pieces they would be tweaked to reflect a late war fit. That, and an additional sprue with single and triple 25mmAA, new foremast, radars, roll-off DC racks, maybe some splinter shielding. Couldn't say when that might happen, though.

I'm actually a little surprised that new PE has yet to be released. There is a deck mask for this kit that is out. It would certainly be possible to use railings and ladders that are out there, plus Rainbow has class specific PE for funnel grills and torpedo reload girders. Grab rails in this scale would be overscale. That applies to my built examples as well.

It would interesting to see if the PE set for either the Fujimi regular version or the NEXT version of the early war Kagero type would fit this kit. I don;t have one on hand to experiment with. Not yet, anyway.

Sphyrna Model Studio, which seems to me to be a Flyhawk company is going to release an IJN Destroyer Kagero PE Sheets Upgrade Edition and an IJN Destroyer Kagero PE Sheets Basic Edition for the Pitroad kagero W-213.

Regards,

Berend.

I assume you mean this release? https://www.ebay.ca/itm/154695316694?ep ... SwOWlhjSIf
Seems to be a bit overkill for an already good kit!

No I meant just the seperate pe sheets sets.

I am not sure but it looks as though this deluxe release doesn't contain the upgrade edition pe sheets set

What more could they possibly add? Turned brass masts, gun barrels, and winch drums in addition to 3 PE sheets!

I wish that the Tripod Masts for the Sphryna Kager? PE upgrade set was sold separately, to be used for all IJN Destroyers, whose tripod Masts are nearly identical, and only slight modifications of the existing Masts would be sufficient to produce the masts for all IJN Tripod masts (and then some).

These have really raised the bar on IJN detailing.

Yes this set ist awesome.
Sadly I build a Kagero class destroyer and now I have no idea for an early one.

The Sphryna is the same set as sold under the Pit-Road label for the new Kagero kit. It is wonderfully extensive, but for me, it's a bit of overkill for 1/700.

I'm planning a review for the new Yukikaze kit. Hopefully for June 1.

for all IJN Destroyers, whose tripod Masts are nearly identical,
There are subtle differences in placement, depending on class. A universal set would be very challenging. And that set would not be applicable to Shimakaze, the Akizukis, or the Matsu/Tachibanas. Even the Fubukis would have some issues with the trailing legs of the foremast.

OTOH, it's possibly feasible that one could make a prewar/early war universal foreleg - that's the piece that extends high enough to include all the yardarms.

A late war mast is far more problematic.
