I get giddy myself Kenny, fitting everything and the Vic's Island is only small compared to the superstructure on the Marlborough. Just think, I have all what Ron has done, to do yet. :Tirade:

Not a great amount of work was done today, as most of it was spent shopping. However I did manage to get a few hours in, late afternoon/early evening and concentrated on fitting the railings around various parts of the superstructure and mast platforms.

These are actually brass frets meant for a model open balcony tram. I just happened to have these from way back when I used to model these things along with railways. They look quite the part and this has saved me a few bucks, which helps keep the cost down. So far I have spent about 250 building this model.

First the mast platforms.

Next is the top of the Signal House and the starboard side signalling platform by the funnel

The port side of the Signal House top

Finally for todays work, I fitted the Red, White & Green Call Up Lights to the starboard side.

Image

Just a bit more to do, then it will all be painted for the next photo session.

Tomorrow I am getting my Speed Controllers, so I can then get the two outboard shaft motors fitted and all wired up, ready for the sailing test, sometime next week.

Enjoy. :thumbs_up_1: Victorious

Okay guys, get your overalls on cos we are going down below to the Vic's Boiler & Engine Rooms.

I was hoping to have got my three Electronize speed controlers yesterday, but the suppliers here in Tamworth were not open, so I will be getting them Monday morning.

Meanwhile, I decided to get the inside of the hull painted throughout and did some work making up the engine mountings for the two outboard motors.

These motors are smaller than the centre motor and are Bulah 500's. These will be run from one 12volt 12 amp hour gel cell battery, through two speed controllers to give independent prop control. The centre motor which I fitted a few weeks ago is a Bulah 800 and this will
be run on 18volts, from a 12volt 12 amp and a 6volt 10amp wired in series to obtain 18volts and will have its own speed controller.

So if you have all got your overalls on, we will now proceed to the Boiler Room. This is where the batteries are located. The space infront of the single 12 volt battery, is for a smoke generator, which will be coupled to the funnel, directly above.

Here you can see the two larger 12 volt and the smaller 6 volt batteries.

Image

In this photo, you will notice a white plastic tube, this is a length of 22mm plastic water pipe and will represent the main steam pipe from the Boilers (Batteries) to the Turbines (motors) and will contain all the neccessary wiring.

Image

We now visit the Engine Room and here you can see the three Turbines (motors) fastened down onto their respective engine mountings with brass and copper clips screwed to the mounting blocks which can be easily removed. The mountings are painted black and the shafts are painted red, which go through the plummer block supports painted black.
This adds a bit of colour to the Engine Room

Image

You will also notice, that I have placed to large removable lead ballast weights, just forward of the outboard motors, these weigh 7lbs each.
The next photo shows the main steam pipe, where it goes through the bulkhed into the Boiler Room. This bulkhead was put in today and has yet to be painted, notice that I have made it to be lifted out, it slides into position between the support lips on each side of the fixed side bulkheads.

Image

Here is a shot looking aft, with the main steam pipe running through the Engine Room. T peices and bends will be inserted into this pipe, to allow take of pipes of 15mm diam to each motor, which will contain the wiring. This keeps everything neat and also looks as though there is actually a steam system installed, between both machinery spaces. Eventually, the Batteries will be coverd by mock up Boilers, made from card, to give the illusion that it is a boiler room, when the flight deck is removed.

Image

Finally, whilst we are inside the hull, here is a shot of the Steering Gear Compartment, with the tiller arm linked to it's servo. The wood brackets round the stern, is where the Quarterdeck will be placed.

Image

You can now remove your overalls :lol_3: :lol_3: :lol_3:

Enjoy. :thumbs_up_1: Victorious.

Just a quick update of work in the Engine Room. I have now fitted all three speed controlers, receiver and everything wired up ready to go.

You will see the speed controlers in the first photo, these have been placed forward of the outboard motors. The deck plate covers 14 lbs of lead weight ballast, which will remain there permanently. All told the Vic now weighs in at 36 lbs, without the batteries and extra ballast. These will be loaded at the waterside. At present the ship can be lifted without any trouble. When completed, it should weigh in at about 38 lbs including a dozen die cast metal aircraft, less batteries and extra ballast needed for sailing.

Image

In the last two photos, you will see the plastic steam piping that comes through the bulkhead from the Boiler Room, where the batteries are situated. All the wirijng to the batteries go through this pipework as well as the feed to the centre motor and wiring for the rudder servo.

Image

Image

I hope to do a test sailing on Thursday, meanwhile, work will continue on the rest of the build.

Enjoy. :thumbs_up_1: Victorious

Geoff,

She's coming along a treat and I can't wait for the 2nd July when hopefully I'll see her in all her glory. I do like the idea of the piping for the electrical leads. I must try that on the 'Derffl.'

Sheesh! This is my second post today!

Sheesh! This is my second post today!
I didn't know you were coming on July 2nd, it will be nice if you could come.

Okay guys, rather a mixed bag today, and quite a bit done as well. I have to keep moving now, as there is still quite a lot to get done for Vic's Big Day in July.

First let me show you what I have been using to make some of the guard rails around the superstructure.

Two types of meshing. The one on the left is a medium used for paint stripping, it is a fine cloth net covered in carborundum and is quite rigid. If rubbed accross a wood surface, it gets rid of the roughness and becomes a bit more pliable for use as guard netting. It has square holes about 1.5mm square. The other type on the right is alluminium mesh, used for car body repairs, which has diamond shaped holes and is ideal for deck gratings and catwalks.

Image

Here you can see where I have cut it into suitable widths approx 5/16" wide.

Image

Now I will show you some of its uses which I have done today.
On the Illustrious Carriers, at the period I am building the Vic, there was a conning bridge, that swung out over the flight deck. This was suspended on a pillar which was against the inboard side of the Island. It was used for incoming aircraft and contained a light system to let pilots know that a landing was clear or not. This bridge was done away with in 1944, when the ship had a major refit and a more updated landing system was installed.

This is the bridge walkway which was made from two very narrow strips of angled styrene, with a deck made from the alluminium mesh. The gaurd netting was made from the carborundum meshing. This has a thin alluminium tube glued to it, which fits inside the pillar ( a slightly larger tube) to allow it to pivot.

Image

Image

Here you can see the pillar and the platform to get onto the bridge in either the folded or open position. Incidently, the platform is a shelf support bracket.

Image

Bridge fitted in the folded position, alongside the superstructure.

Image

Bridge in the open position, swung out over the flight deck, with wire support cable above.

Image

Image

Painted and fitted with it's lights

Image

Note that the superstructure has now been fitted with guard netting and has been painted, except for a few areas which need black and other colours added. A bit more work on the funnel has yet to be done, such as navigation lights platform and ladders.

Image

In this shot, the call up lights, have been covered with masking tape, whilst I sprayed the superstructure. I forgot to remove it for the photo, also I fitted the mast wrong way round, the ladders should be at the rear. Good job it is not fixed in position yet. :doh_1:

Image

Image

Image

Guard nets have also been applied around the various platfoms along the flight deck.

Image

These are the top set of Carley Floats attached to the starboard side of the Island.

Image

Image

Finally for today, I have been doing some work on the Corsairs. I have cut the wings on one of them and repositioned them in the folding position, so that it will now fit on the lifts. It was proped up by the pliers, until the super glue was set. A piece of brass rod was glued between the wing halves for extra strength.

Image

Here you can see the completed plane on the rear aircraft lift. Note also the guard netting around the rear gun platform, searchlight and director plarforms.

Image

Image

And finally for today, I painted one of the Corsairs in a darker blue, the nose cone will be painted yellow, when all the rest have been done.

Image

Enjoy. :thumbs_up_1: Victorious

Thank's Ron, but it's really down to what you taught me. There is more to the Vic than I imagined, as I have got the Gallery Decks to start on yet, Boats to make up and fit as well as the two boat cranes. Then there is the Quarterdeck, Cable Deck & Flight Deck to fit out too. But I don't want to rush it for July. I will just get done what I can. At least it will be looking the part, if not actually finished.

Hehe, when I saw the first picture, I thought, "What're those flowers on top of the funnel?" :lol_1:

Interesting thing with the swinging bridge! A bit dangerous, wouldn't it be, if the plane coming in comes in too high and strikes it?

That's probably one reason why it was removed in 1944. It was a feature that only the Illustrious Class Carriers used. I thought it would add a bit of character to the model.

Although I am modelling the Vic in it's early period, it will not neccessarily be painted in camouflage. I am keeping it all grey, which it appeared after WW2.
I like the earlier period fit, but as this model is for my own enjoyment, It will not be a true representation of her as she was during that period. The paint scheme will be more mid fifties, just before she was modernised to the Angled Deck Carrier. She had green superstructure and gallery decks and had her funnel markings by this time, plus her name was picked out in red lettering on her stern. During the war period, everything was camouflage and markings and names were not carried.
