Calling all Kriegsmarine Prinz Eugen, Admiral Hipper & Blücher fans

Hi All,

Since I am currently working on Revells' 1/720 scale Prinz Eugen as I wait for pieces parts to arrive for my other builds in progress, I thought I would share some of the reference sites and information that I have accumulated for this rather graceful and classy looking vessel. As is my habit of searching out as much information as I can on any subject before putting the blade or clipper to work on the plastic of a kit, the first place I generally start is my own library of books that I have collected up over the years.

I have the Squadron Signal In Action book "German Heavy Cruisers of WWII" Warships No. 24 which has a number of view drawings of the ship as well as photos. I also have Ospreys' "German Heavy Cruisers 1939-45" New Vanguard release by Gordon Williamson, which has sections on the ship. Another one is "Kriegsmarine-An Illustrated History of the German Navy in WWII" edited by Robert Jackson which has a section devoted to German Cruisers and Destroyers with some Photos of the ship. All of these are currently available through several sources with which most of us are already familiar. I am sure that there are others out there, if any of you have titles that I am not familiar with, please feel free to add them to the thread so we can all enjoy them.

I think my great-uncle served on the Eugen. I like that cruiser a lot, very hardy ship.

I would say so, it took two A bomb blasts before it finally sank, the one that did it wa an underwater blast that ruptured about 50 feet of plating alongside one of the engine rooms. They managed to tow it outside of the lagoon so it wouldn't block the entrance and it sat with a list to one side as they left it, intending to move it further the next day. The next morning when they arrived it had turned turtle with the stern on the beach side and the bow some 650 feet distant in about 100 feet of water.

Anyone in your family have any pictures of the ship from Great Uncles' days aboard? Always on the lookout for any research data.

I've always wanted to build models of all the ships at the battle of the Denmark straight, and may actually get around to it, once I complete QM and my collection of US DDs. I've never seen the Tamiya Eugen kit, any comments?

I wish (hope) that Trumpeter would release a 1/350 scale Hipper class cruiser.

Avery, the Tamiya Eugen is very good...I have two in fact! It's the best model of him in plastic at 1/700...not that are many around apart from the old Matchbox Hipper!!
Get the Tamiya Eugen and some PE special sets for it. I got the WEM one and I am quite satisfied with it.

Tread, my family may have pictures, but that part of my family lives in Germany, and I rarely see them. My great uncle is dead, but maybe his wife has some old stuff. I'll see what I can do.

Samek (resin from the Czech Republic) make a good Prinz Eugen. It is a late war version. Mine looked very good, unfortunatly a few months ago it suffered an untimely demise.

Currently I am building the Tamiya 1/700 Prinz Eugen with a Tom's Model Works photo etch set and Clipper brass 8 inch gun barrels.

Cool deal Ben, if you find anything slap it up here for all to use and enjoy. The more information we can find for all the different ship types makes a very unique and valuable resource for everyone to utilize and to draw more new folks to the site.

Hi All,

After working over the little 1/720 Revell kit for a few days I finally got it done. As I prefer to add my ships to a water type base I built it up as a waterline kit, an option provided by the fine folks at Revell. Not being ble to find any PE to use that was ship specific in the local hobby shop, I did locate a Gneisenau set for the railings and few other bits in 1/700 scale. Once I got it assembled I decided to use the late war scheme of dark gray lower and light gray upper to show off the lines of the ship more than the camoflaged versions would. I rigged it out using stretched sprue and added a few little things here and there. The kit does not include any of the 20mm Quad mounts to the top of the turrets or the locations on either side of the funnel even though they provide the tubs, I made mine up from some IJN 20mm twin mounts attatched to the sides of a post of styrene stock in the proper locations. Painting was with Model Master enamels and a wash with oil paints to help bring out some of hte molded in and added details.

Now all I have to do is make up the base and add the ship to it.

Well I'd not call myself a diehard fan of the Hippers - I do think they were very fine looking ships though - and Prinz especially had the service history to back herself up. Then I read Dr. Fritz Otto's book about 'his' ship - and had even more respect for it. The above is the fruitiion of my two years working on the Tamiya kit. Looking back, the model stands up rather well - but a few things I now wish I'd done better.

This model has really put me off 1/700 scale ships - and I am now swinging towards larger scales... I think these photos do more justice to the model than does the naked eye - so what's the point of doing things this small anyway?

Hello. If you could bear with me a moment I would appreciate it.
I'm a WWII aircraft builder but my hobby started in 1972 with a 1/720 Prinz Eugen. Bought it for Dad but he let me do it. Woke up one morning in 2006 and the idea to build the Prinz just literally popped into my mind.
Got my new 1/700 Prinz, books, PE set and it's grown from that day.
Anyway I really want to do the Prinz in the "Operation Cerberus" paint scheme but I have conflicting sources. Can anyone set me straight? I had been leaning towards the kit instruction's scheme but now I'm not so sure.
I'm also stocking up on Scharnhorst and Gneisenau materials so Cerberus is gonna be my theme for some time.
Any and all help appreciated.

I attempted some PE mast head antennaes last night. Whew, get me back to 1/48 scale. Now I know I need lots of light and no caffeine before trying more 1/700 PE.

Hi Ken,

No worries, you do get used to it... the amount of stuff I broke on my model - or had drunken friends break for me, while it was still being built, and even after I finished it - well I'm pretty used to fixing up these things now.

This is the Tamiya 1/700 PRINZ EUGEN in a late 1942 configuration. It is painted in MM Acryl Marine Dunklegrau 51. I used GMM, WEM (cranes and doors) and Lion Roar (quad 20mm AA guns) photo etch. The masts have been replaced with bronze rod and stainless steel tubing. The rigging is Dai-Riki fishing line. This is my second build of this kit and I built it again because I was not satisfied with my first try. Rich

Everyone,

Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement. My Prinz has temporarily taken a back seat to other projects, but I have not given up my quest to build/ represent the three Operation Cerberus ships.

The Prinz will be in drydock but I'll get back into it as soon as I can.
