I just published a new technical and operational history of German snorkel-equipped U-Boats.
Total Undersea War: The Evolutionary Role of the Snorkel in Dnitz's U-Boat Fleet, 19441945
Here is blog link with an introductory article from Pen and Sword:

This will be of particular interest to U-Boat/submarine modelers because, among a number of topics, I address the technical inaccuracies about the configuration of snorkel-equipped U-Boats.
One correction comes in the form of the how the snorkel was configured, to include its trunking, mast, head valves, and locking mechanism, particularly on the VIIC. Unfortunately, there has never been a single accurate model of a snorkel equipped Type VIIC produced by any model company to-date, and this statement includes the woefully inaccurate Revell 1/72 VIIC/41 Atlantic Boat. The problem has been the lack of available technical information in this field, coupled with the inaccurate restoration of U-995 in Laboe, Germany that has served as the basis for snorkel-equipped Type VIICs models. (See my previous article published by the Deutsches U-Boot Museum on U-995): http://dubm.de/en/carbon-monoxide-poiso ... type-viic/
Hopefully I have addressed some of these issues. There is a lot more in the book, but I thought this little bit of detail might be of interest to some. . .and perhaps it will offer some inspiration on your next build!
Cheers,
Aaron

Re: New Book on Late-War Snorkel-Equipped U-Boats
I can verify that this book is an excellent source on the subject. There is a good bit of art, operational reports, and a great 'case study' on the problems with the early snorkel applications.
Also from this author is a fastenating study on U-1105, the 'Black Panther', and Germany's attempts at accoustic tiles.
Good stuff all around.
