In fact I just found my mistake about my firt print, the barrel tube was hollow and therefore very thin, hence the collapse during printing, yet I had checked ... it is by increasing the scale to 1/48 directly with Chitubox, the program that generates the file for the printer that I realized the thing, I will reprint to be compliant.

I'm dragging my heels a bit at the moment, I spend a lot of time on the guns, because there's not much 1/200 on the internet for me, even at Shapeway, it's not very good in terms of definition, so I'm sticking to it.

I start the design of the 3 inches / 50 ( 76 mm) guns, they are placed (2) on the front platform and 2 at the back of the ship. A new big job, but I have what I need in docs.

Here is the latest version of the 40 mm Bofors. I have already printed a 1/48, the printing is superb, but then I took the drawing again to add some details it was missing a little bit.

In the history of the United States Navy, several 3-inch, 50-caliber guns existed and equipped U.S. ships from the late 1890s to the late 1990s.

Declined in several models ("Mark"), we can count 3 historical evolutions, which were mounted as anti-torpedo or anti-aircraft guns in secondary artillery of battleships and cruisers, in main artillery of destroyers, or as submarine guns.

Mark 10 - 22

Most of the guns of this series were used as anti-aircraft guns, the first being built during the First World War.

Widely used until the 1930s, they were gradually replaced by 5 inch/25 caliber guns and then by 40 mm Bofors.

During the Second World War, they were the main armament of small ships, such as escort destroyers, submarines, merchant ships and oil tankers. Thus, 14,000 units were built between 1940 and 1945.

The documentation I retrieved to draw it, it is more complex than the 40 mm Bofors.

Printing of 2 1/48 Bofors barrels for fun.

There are sailors in 1/48 that could make a nice scene on a double platform. I will keep this in stock.

There will only be one 5 inch (127 mm) 1/200 left on the rear platform to design unless I buy one from Distephan to see the quality:

I received the anchor chains, I had to redrill the stopper holes, not easy without breaking anything, but it's good, it looks good. There are still the anchor grips to make.

The front gun platform is finished, I'm waiting for the NorthStar firing director, it's not easy to get it from them!

For the colours of the work clothes, I was inspired by these nice figurines. Colors will be corresponding after weathering.

I don't have any dungaree shirts or trousers around any more. Dungaree trousers about the same color in service as somewhat washed and washed Levi's, not a really dark blue. The shirts usually fade to a pretty light blue, without a lot of saturation. It's a nice touch having a number of crew members visible on the weather decks.

Both of your projects are quite nice and being in the same scale there should be some cross pollinating with regards to parts and fittings.

Thanks for the 5" gun' doc. I'll get started soon. ;)

@Tom,Tks, yes same scale, But these two ships would never have been able to meet, too bad.

My father in the engine room on the french tanker "Kirkouk" built in Holland/Amsterdam after WWII for TOTAL (CNP), he was second engineer , main engine wad 2 strokes diesel engine Stork, seven cylinders.

September 5, 2020.

I started to install the piping that is supplied and of different sections, Ervergreen tube, piano strings, everything goes through it, that's what will give finesse to the details for the bridge.

Image

Image

I am now struggling with painting, a dazzle is always complicated and long to paint. I also made progress on the front pipes, but I still have some to install.

I started painting to find the right method. Black is Tamiya, easier to apply than LifeColors. There will be an antifouling, there was USN red or black.

On the Dazzle measure, there was no antifouling, but I think they didn't bother to represent it. On the photos we can see that it does not mount very high along the hull so that the camouflage remains effective, probably, on light ballast.

USS Tamalpais (AO-96), veterans of the tankers pose in front of this very beautiful model, we can see a paravane on her launching mast, it will be reproduced also but at the sea station, although..:

USS Mascoma (AO-83), Paravane at the rack.
Image

USS Tamalpais (AO-96) - You can see the black strip (boot-topping) and the red antifouling .

Image

Image

Image

Black here on the Pamanset, or just a black stripe and red underneath? This is also a possibility.

Image

USS Sebec (AO-87) (1944 - 1946), but same "Escambia Class" series. San Francisco bridge behind. USN Red antifouling probably.

Image

I have kept the hull defects, I could have erased them as elsewhere, they will be useful for the application of the patina, the bow plates are often deformed by the pressure of the waves... This can be seen on the photos above.

Image

Image

Drawing of the foremast, 3 backwards inclination, with its crow's nest and the hydrocarbon vapour discharges from the cargo tanks, the ladder to climb it will be in PE and also the winches for manoeuvring the cargo derricks. I have simplified it. Not too many pictures of the machine.

This one looks a little bit like it, I could be inspired by it.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I don't have this documentation when i started to draw:

In two pieces to shorten the printing time, 13 cm high in total.

Successful printing for this winch declined in two versions, the valves are well printed as well as the rods of connecting rods, the forward mast too. I printed some more. I have the steam supply pipes made in Evergreen.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

September 15, 2020

I continue on the details of the foredeck, mast stay cables, crown buoys, dome of the forward bunker tanks, add many steam pipes, install the winches and their piping, 2 drums of supply hoses.

Northstars finally sent me the M51 firing directors... It's coming out in dribs and drabs at their place...

Image

Image

Dome of bunker tanks and deep tank. Turrets. Hoses and their supports

Cardan valve handwheels.

These valves are at the bottom of the tank on the suction pipe of the petroleum product.

There is a large main line valve and a stripping valve, a smaller pipe that goes down to the bottom of the tank. A rod system with cardan joints mounts flush with the deck to close or open them.

I've seen this system still present on coasters from the 1970s and 80s, a horror to maintain.

Quickly replaced on newer vessels by hydraulically operated valves.

I started the drawings of the 2 cargo masts, and the 6 small ones along the rail.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Printing of the 2 front lcargo masts booms, of different lengths, and the small masts along the beam, there are 4 of them, there are 2 more at the back in front of the middle castle intended for the launching of the 2 Paravanes, I haven't drawn it yet because I lack information on their exact shape, but it's on the right track.

It's going to come a pandemic...

September 20, 2020:

I made good progress during these two days, especially on the rigging.

I bought a good tool to make "small holes", it's expensive, but great and for life.
It allowed me to make the pulleys.

The rigging is not finished, but not far, at least on the front, I still have the lifting cables for the hoses to mount.

I also have some hoses still to be added including a port / starboard manifolds, the forward hose was connected to it in operation. You can see it on this picture of the AO81. This photo helped me a lot.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

A few pictures, under the Breton sun, of the progress of the starboard Dazzle scheme, almost finished, there is a comma missing at the stern, painted this evening and maybe an addition to be made at the bow, depending on the height of the antifouling.

I'll be able to start the port side paint in the next few days, then the antifouling.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Just added what was missing on the starboard dazzle, this side is finished. A few little touch-ups to do and it will be perfect.

Image

Image

Added the masts for the launching of the paravanes, I integrated the pulley, it's not bad, I just had to drill the hole to pass the wire, 0.3 mm drill bit ...

Creation and printing of the two forward manifolds, the manifolds allow, the connection with the ground or another ship to load or unload the products.

On some ships, they can be sophisticated enough to allow several combinations of connections depending on the shore installations, never identical because several products can be loaded/unloaded at the same time .

The most provided are on chemical transport vessels.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Received the shooting director M51 from Northstars Ukraine, of the beautiful work, it is very fine, very fragile, comme counter weight are broken, I had to separate the operator from his machine for painting, too bad it is not made of origin.

I also received some grids that can be used as a footbridge (Pass) or as a station barrier, luckily it was exactly at the desired width, a stroke of luck, it's pretty sturdy, which allows to glue the railing easily, just cut the small arrows at the end of the uprights with scissors. It looks really good, I've already seen this kind of openwork plank, what's nice is that you can see the structure underneath.

I found this PE board in England a few days ago. They are the only ones who make and sell this reference.

https://www.scalelinkfretcetera.co.uk/product/slaf10/

Image

So I installed this pass, and also, the removable gangway that allows once lifted to open the front hold panel.

I'm starting to get some dust on the deck, a cleaning is necessary...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Finished the central walkway, I'm waiting for stairs ordered at L'Arsenal 2.0, I don't have enough, but not available, it's going to be long.

Started the Dazzle Bd scheme. The starboard forward railling is installed.

Image

Image

Image

Printed the aft mast. 12 hours.

Image

Raw formwork, paint earlier, I painted the central bridge last night in 20B, the 5O parts to be painted according to the Dazzle scheme.

There will be some camouflage paint additions to be done on the platforms of the Oerlikon 20 mm.

Nothing is glued.

Image

Image

Image

Image

October 9, 2020:

As expected the rear part of the main deck is progressing well. The deck under the platform is of course equipped.

The hole punching device is interesting, I had not seen one like that before. In the larger 1:120 scale I could use a regular hole punch plier used by leatherworkers to make the hundreds of blocks used on an APA. For 1:200 a smaller tool would be needed!

Of curiosity, how much resin was involved in construction of the hull?

Only hull, weight 800 grammes of resin, 1763 lb. Resin cost: 28 euros / 33 $

If I made it again now with more experience, it would be less, 700 grammes maybe.

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07Z96 ... UTF8&psc=1

Now as this moment with accessory, paint etc..: 0,960 g / 2116 lb

Indeed, we are always very well received, very good restaurants, often with French chefs, very good meat, especially black angus... and very good local wines. Exceptional green spaces in the cities. A real big and very modern city. We spent a year and a half in Moreton Bay as gas storekeeper for the whole area. We could go ashore from time to time. It lasted a year and a half. Tout le monde a t charmant avec nous. Everybody was charming with us.

On the port bow of this part of the deck, I could see a utility boat, as can be seen on some of the photos.

I found this site very interesting with different models of USN boat. Still to find plans...

https://www.okieboat.com/CAD%20boats.html

Service boat Mk 2 , 40 feet.

The 40 feet service boat was most often used to transport naval troops between the ship and the coast.

The benches in the middle could be folded up and moved to the side to allow the boat to be used for transporting goods. It was sometimes used to transport equipment and other personal effects purchased in ports to the ship. It was stowed on the deck of the harbour boat, with the 28-foot personnel service boat nestled above it.

Image

Image

Image

The 26 feet with a small roof at the bow appeared to be stationed as a lifeboat on the Pamancet from a photo:

I'm going to "pump" this davit plan it's perfect:

Probably a more recent model of canoe, which I found in my personal photos, more tapered at the front. But it looks a lot like it.

Pictures taken going up the Mississippi, passing New Orleans (2003), the name of the canoe will not leave you indifferent:

Wiki:
Jean Lafitte, born in the years 1770-1780 in the Southwest of France or perhaps in Santo Domingo, and probably died between 1823 and 1827, was a French freebooter who sailed the Gulf of Mexico at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

He created his own "Kingdom of Barataria" in the marshes and bayous near New Orleans in order to control the mouth of the Mississippi River after the purchase of Louisiana in 1803, with more than a thousand men under his command. His support for American General Andrew Jackson turned the Battle of New Orleans on its head in 1815. He took part in the slave trade, which was banned at the time. He and his brother Pierre then founded Galveston, the first cotton port in Texas, where they spied in the service of Spain against the Mexican revolutionaries between November 1815 and June 1816, according to the Spanish archives in Seville. Numerous sites in Louisiana and Texas bear his name........
