Good to see you are continuing on this one!

I would also airbrush after construction.

But I would do the contrary: use very low pressure and thin the paint very much.
This way, you can apply very thin coats of paint. You will need many quick passes (15 to 20 or so?) to cover completely, but exactly this allows a lot of control and prevents you from drowning the detail in paint.

Start with airbrushing the most hidden areas and the most awkward angles. While doing that, you will automatically apply some paint to the adjacent areas too. Then airbrush the rest.

An added benefit to low pressure and high thinning ratio is that the final coat of paint is very thin and smooth.

Thanks for the suggestions to all three of you! I will do testing on this to see which actually works for me with my limited skill set the best. The results you three achieve are obviously good! The question becomes, which of those can this monkey with a model actually make work:).

Hey look! An actual update!

I am trying to get the majority of the parts attached to the hull before painting occurs. Once that is done I will prime and paint. I am also starting to experiment with resin for the water base.

Port side. Finished the degaussing cable.

I always seem to have trouble getting into the nooks and crannies with the airbrush if I assemble everything first. I give you credit for being able to do so.

Thanks Dan and Martin. Although Martin, it remains to be seen if I will get into the nooks and crannies. This is the first time I am building in this kind of order. might be the last too but I have seen others pull it off...so we will cross our fingers.

Ooooh, the third IJN carrier is underway again!

I always seem to have trouble getting into the nooks and crannies with the airbrush if I assemble everything first.

That's a common problem indeed.
My solution is to start airbrushing with the nooks and crannies. By the time these are covered, the adjacent areas will be covered in paint too, but not more than absolutely necessary. After that, all remaining areas can be 'filled in'.
For this to work, it is necessary to take your time and build the paint up in thin layers. Very thin paint aznd low pressure help with that.
