APA project

The year 2020 seems to be best navigated to avoid rocks and shoals with somewhat low expectations. I ordered A Phrozen 4k printer, which after a lot of PO shipping confusion, I picked up today, however the resin was apparently shipped separately? Given the trouble snagging this from big blue and white I don't expect to see the resin. Living at the end of a long supply chain has it's pleasures and snags.

I saw one model (The Australian Navy "yacht") where some decent lettering was done by cricut stenciling. A lot of my LCVP's had large enough letters to possibly avail of this. Maybe...

Yesterday I attached the forward Kingposts and rigged lines to the winches. Have to add a couple of preventers to each boom, these take a while to rig, producing the multi sheave blocks, running the lines and then reaching into the spiderweb to mount them.

Yes that was the case when I bought my Photon S.

Frozen resin seems difficult to find at the moment in Europe and expensive, I had to pre-order it.

I found I was supposedly able to order it directly from Phrozen, but whether they actually ship it is another question. Shipping was more than the resin!

Snowy day so got some ship work done. The Cargo rigging is mostly done (whew) though working inside the resulting spiderwebb can be interesting. Did manage to knock a sky lookout off it's base but an easy repair.

Deck space becoming even sparser!

With regards to Phrozen Resin, I got two emails with a timeline when they might ship it (maybe next month) and a third one from Phrozen itself notifying of it being shipped via UPS and arriving Thursday?

Otherwise back to making cleats. padeyes, coiling ropes and whatnot.

Ah! Found another detail to add. many of the king posts had brackets for hanging hanked ropes. Easy enough to hank a rope from thread as compared to flemishing or flaking. Of course discovering an easier and more successful way of doing the later would also be good!

A "Hanked" rope is coiled and then a remaining portion is wrapped around the middle to form a "waist" with loops at either end.

We usually wrapped the waist with many coils, but you get the idea.

This was a very common way we prepared our ropes for carrying for rock and ice climbing when they were not in use. As to how the name came about, I don't know. I wish I could come up with a better method for flemishing than what I have so far!.

Thank you Hank! It's the period reversion to B&W. Something that helps a bit is "photo stacking" which in a longitudinal shot helps with the depth of field which is always a problem. I did miss one plane and it is little fuzzy in front of the bridge.

I finally got some Phrozen resin for my new printer and an about to try a few sample items, too late for this project which uses no commercial parts and completely traditional methods and materials. I learned (and continue to do so) a lot this way. Perhaps the height of absurdity was carving and assembling individual anchor chain links from styrene. The wood that I first tried had a tendency to split. Song certainly has this art down solidly.

Turning individual oil drums on a lathe from aluminum, bridge pelorus etc. Not everything is optimal, but we learn.

I appreciate traditional methods, I use my lathe a lot also for some parts of my vintage cars and my models, the 3D printer is just another new tool like a lathe, files or a milling machine. Sometimes you have to mix all these methods to get a nice result.

I don't know if it's old enough to be vintage but I have a 1988 BMW M6, fortunately very reliable!

Stud link anchor chain is one thing where 3D printing really shines! The Floating Drydock started selling links of 3D printed chain a while back. I have some and it is really nice! A LOT easier than carving individual links one by one!

I know about and have used this product. The point of this APA was to do everything myself. I was intrigued by Song's expertise at this and astonished by EJ Foeth's soldering up link by link. Sometimes coming up with solutions with available materials in the subarctic challenges one a bit. So things could be "better" by purchasing items, but I've had my fun.
