1/200 USS Nimitz

Hi Song,
Absolutely brilliant work! I am enjoying watching your rib and planking method for the ships hull, so well done and the aircraft are amazing. My favourite are the Seahawk helicopters as I hope to try and copy your method for my ship. With regards to your recent 1/200 New Jersey�s radar and railings, I left you a message but I guess for you, that project must be finished? Can I kindly ask your advice? I had planned to make my Anzac out of ice-cream sticks, but I cannot get the wood thin enough and I fail to make even strips. Instead, I�d like to use bamboo like you have.
Can you please tell me, how did you make the AN/SPS-49 RADAR? Is it from bamboo like the deck railings? Then how do you make such fine strips? I have tried with wood and bamboo skewers but they never turn out neat and uniform like yours. I had given up progress on my ship because I couldn�t make the radar and difficult parts out of wood, but now I see you have done it so easily. You are truly a Master! And the helo is fantastic too. Can you recommend a YouTube video, or if not, could you please kindly give me some instructions for making thin strips with the bamboo and advice on how you have curved the Radar so well? I would be very grateful. Thank you so much.

i thank your kind comments of my models and methods. I could'nt read you reply of USS New Jersey.
I'm sorry.
I made explanation 'making Bamboo wire'.
It's very old style because I'm only analog era man.
1.prepare raw material Bamboo not commercial goods(wood pick,ice cream stick....) of course well dried.
2.prepare cutter knife(thin blade is better)
3.See 2nd picture; 1) half spilted raw Bamboo 2)split and split less than 10mm width.
3) isolate inner and outter side. outter side is harder than inner one.
4.You could procedure sketched drawings. Yes outter side is used.
You could make wood frame from inner part of Bamboo.
Try this method if you have questions ask me please.
It's difficult to explane for me because my language problem.

Hi Song, thank you very kindly for describing your techniques, very helpful and I am very grateful. I have ordered some bamboo �skin� but must wait a few weeks for it to arrive. I will try your suggestions and let you know how I go.

Hi Song, in the meantime I will try the technique you�re suggesting, with whole bamboo piece. If I understand you correctly, you split the whole bamboo into smaller pieces down it�s length. Then you either gradually shave off the inner part so you�re left with the outer shiny skin of the bamboo, or you cut off the inner part to use with framing. Is it just the outer skin that you used for radar and railings etc? You cut the skin into thin strips to suit the size needed for the radar or railings? I understand you mentioned that you use the inner part of the bamboo for framing, is it difficult to work with, to shape and sand, is it still very hard, like the outer skin? Your English is very good, I wish I could speak some Korean like you! Thank you and kind regards.

I'm glad my method of handling Bamboo is help to you.
Yes the outer skin is used elelments of RADAR,railing...etc. The handling method of inner parts is similar to outer too.
But it spilt regulally like outer one. So it some more knife work.

A huge project in both size and scope. Every warship seems to have so many items attached per square meter of deck or bulkhead. The principal is easily realized in the size of this ship and the tremendous amount of detail available to reproduce. The complexity of the hangar interior is but one example. This project seems to extend beyond your normal extraordinary workmanship!

I have been following your builds for years. Your craftsmanship with wood is extraordinary!

Correct me if I am wrong, but up to now all of your models have been made almost exclusively with wood, with the exception of fine wire or thread for rigging. And only the hulls were painted.

Even the air wing for the Nimitz is made of wood.

It appears you are using plastic on the Nimitz hanger deck, and you have said you were going to paint the entire ship.

So I am curious why you are making this change?

It's no meaning to change my building style.
I want to use all kind materials and skill,plastic,copper wire,photo etching,decal,...also paint entire ship not only hull.
That's it.
