I have been wondering about that myself....Rick E Davis wrote:I hate to nitpick at this point in your build, but I'm pretty sure that USS SOMERS (DD-301) had a "Poole" 3-in/23cal gun and not a 3-in/50cal gun installed on the fantail as you have.
I have a lot of images of the Flush-Deckers and they all had the smaller Poole 3-in/23cal gun or similar guns (as completed). And that includes the two images of SOMERS I do have. None carried the 3-in/50cal guns until the 1940-41 ASW mod rearming with six 3-in/50cal guns replacing the four 4-in guns and two of the torpedo tubes banks.

WONDERFUL!! As to your question about a photo you posted 4 Feb asking what was on top of the yardarm - those were more than likely omni-directional signal lights, also called "yardarm blinkers". They were used to send messages to multiple ships in a formation at night - important stuff like "Standby to turn 90 degrees to starboard" SOmething that would be way to slow to do sending the message by signal lamp to each ship individually.

I have in my small display case a telegraph key that was used to send just such messages via masthead lights. Interesting ships that soldiered on through WWII in often not so well publicized roles as APD's, DMS etc, but still in the line of fire.
Nice model!

Oh man! This build is awesome. I've built the Revell kit a number of times, never to this level of detail. My father served aboard at least two flush deckers, USS Tattnall DD-125 and the USS Goff DD-247. I built him a model of the Tattnall by a company, which escapes my memory at the moment, for Christmas one year.

Txs all for the nice words.
@ jep, some companies do build any ship you like... they can't go so deep in detail though ...it would be too expensive for sale

Re: Revell 1/240 Campbeltown as DD 301 USS Somers
The one I built for my dad was a 1/350 scale resin kit from Blue Water (???) maybe, man those ships are tiny in that scale. It was boxed as the USS Ward and came with a resin Japanese mini sub. I'd love to get Bluejacket's 310 destroyer but its a bit out of my price range and I'll be lucky to finish the Blue Jacket Gambier Bay I have started. Not to mention the multitude of other kits I have started, and those waiting to be started.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings. I really enjoyed you build and I'll more than likely go through your build log a few more times
