That looks really good! Once I get the Revell LSM kit in hand I'll check to see how theirs compares - may need to replace depending on how detailed it turns out. I'll have to compare your photos to the diagram I sent you. Looks really close!

Yours is made 1:133 scale, correct? Of course, if I convert the kit to LSM/R then it won't be seen - hmmmm.......

The real modelers (like Song and Pascal) make lots of things that can't be seen! Like Song's Airgroup and hangar deck detail or Pascal's Warren of officer's staterooms on his Hornet!

Well Harumph! I found the thread on the forum from quite a few years ago of JC McKay's 1:48 LSM. Apparently he had some photos to supplement the thin info and constructed one that is probably pretty close.

Thanks for sending me J.C. Mackay's forum build for LSM-59 - quite a beautiful model!! Yes, he's got quite a bit of detail - I'm waiting for a 2nd reply from him re. drawings, etc. Did you see his really good shots of the stern anchor, etc.??

As my antecedents might have said: As you can see this version doesn't bear much resemblance to the previous efforts. This one is modeled after McKay's large scale model, most referenced to a LSM winch in a "salvage yard" for sale. I have seen this photo.

A test print going on now.

"Lechccha" know how this comes out. Slow progress as out to the airport involving in airplane stuff most of the day.

That's a really detailed looking Wench!!! A beauty!!! Good Job!!!! I'm wondering what that salvage yard photo looks like - a marine salvage yard? Anyhow, I'll be interested in seeing the printed version once you make one.

Printed 1:133 "Wench" on top of 10 Ruble coin. Not totally from primary sources, somewhat copied from a scratch model by JC McKay, probably the boards local Expert on these ships.

Any minor success are largely a result of contributions of technique, research and encouragement by other modelers here. This particular item is mostly hidden under the deck overhang, but still a rewarding small project.

Painted winch, maybe needs a little touch up, but the general idea. In a project like this one starts to be nudged towards weathering things. Because of the heat, manifolds, tend to be in the natural materials without finish and exhaust ones go to rusty steel.

This what I started with after stripping some crude 65 yr old bits and pieces.

A single sheet of .20 thou 2024T3 aircraft Aluminum, sawed on a Dremel saw circa 1964 and bent into a U and shaped the bow and stern, attached wooden blocks at the bottom cutouts bow and stern.

Dinky (as) 40 mm, Army style for shipboard use. This one is in 1:144, as a test horse for a friend who is contemplating a LSM/R which would sport a couple of these. I printed a pair in 1:120 to see how they look in the larger scale, currently not rinsed or cured. The advantage of these were they required few ships resources or modification before being plopped down somewhere convenient.

Even a small scale difference makes a lot of difference in volume. These two 40 mm's are respectively in 120 and 1:144, the change in volume is a rather large 1.72x increase. For small supporting parts, this makes small details more possible in the printing world though the cross section only increased bt 1.44X.

This is an illustration of how interpretation of colors can be chancy from B&W photography. The use of a red filter was common to separate the skies and clouds and reduce shadow values for contrast. The same photo with the equivalent of a red filter applied in photoshop, so easy enough to confuse or obscure what the hull color was. About all that showed plainly were the barnacles.

Any way.... I painted the bottom the hull with the color Golden Acrylics calls "Red Oxide".

Question for someone who might know. I printed a couple of Handy Billy�s (portable pump). Post War the pump part was often painted red as were the fire hydrants etc. during the war were these painted to match the color scheme of the vessel?

Still in the discovery phase! I found a photo of the CO2 Hose reel assembly in JC McKay's LSM project and drew up one and have it printing (The first iteration is almost always a trial horse). "Leccha" know how it comes out. I would guess being around gasoline vehicles, and Marines and Doggie's, fire was a concern, not to mention combat. Likewise they had about as many life rings as an APA.

Here's the ummm, "Little Gentleman", it's a pretty small item. Not finished printing so guesses as to what will need adjustment. De platforming it will require care not to break the hose.
