Calling all IJN Fuso (扶桑) and Yamashiro (山城) fans

I'm not familiar with the photos you cite from 1943. Typically, capital ships ended up having their lower row of portholes sealed up with covers, as well as portions of the upper row(s) to improve watertight integrity based on actual battle experience.

I can't speak to Fujimi's sources and references, if any. They may have generalized, based on other ship's appearance. Or different sets of plans, like those from Miyukikai (which are based on official plans). Profile Morskie doesn't always list it's sources, and those plans are not always correct.

The same may be true of the location of the waste pipes along the hull.

Once sealed, the portholes were not re-opened. Excepting any ships that survived the war for repatriation duties.

I mean the photos from the book "Gakken No.30. There is a closeup on p.47 and a pic from stareboardside on p.72 which seems to match to a point of time in 1943 where she was in Truk.
This seems to make sense due to the loading, the sunscreening precursors and some identifying characteristics of the ship (such as the platforms around the funnel)
The pictures are partly also in the Profile Morskie booklet and date it also as 1943.

Since the portholes were welded shut, reopening is impossible. So I assume that Fujimi simply made assumptions (as you wrote) which are not based on original pictures or plans. By the way, on their 1/700 Yamashiro 1944 the portholes are all shown open...

Ergo - I will drill them all!

Ah. Well, I am not so sure the photo on p.47 is a wartime photo, regardless of the dates of the photo essay title page. You'll notice that she is not wearing a Type 21 radar atop her bridge, which was installed in late August, 1943. (This might also be the time that her scuttles were sealed.) Prior to that, she was in Japanese waters, save for the Midway/Aleutians Op. So, I'm pretty sure that's a pre-war photo.

The photo on p.72 maybe at Truk, but too indistinct to make out her hull details. I can't see any radar on top.

I'm actually not sure what timeframe/fit you plan to model.

And yes, you�re right - there�s no Typ 21 radar on the picture... Actually there�s no picture existing with Yamashiro showing a typ 21 radar.
So i think the information:
"28 August 1943: Arrives at Kure Navy Yard where a Type 21 air and surface search radar is installed, then returns to Hashirajima to serve as the Naval Gunnery School training vessel."
from combined fleet is not correct, or the photos were all taken before.

Anyway, i will build this time of period in 1943 without typ 21 radar...

Dear Boys & Girls, given that Joy Yard released their 1/700 scale Fuso & Yamashiro kits (1919 configurations) on 31st May 2022; why isn't there any "buzz" about them in this topic. Have they been reviewed yet? Are they even available outside Japan if there are only 2,500 copies of each being moulded? Am I the only one excited by the prospect of these kits? Will they be made available in the UK?
