Iowa Class BB/ Different Use Though

Post by KYamato »

Yep, Im modifying an Iowa battleship in a 3d modelling program..

Only one difference from what you guys normally do..

I actually have to conserve the amount of polygons that I make, because this is going into a game. It shows up about 2-3 times in the game, and really, it looks kinda like an Iowa, but not exactly.. So therefore, I will try to make it look more Iowa than it does now, all help from the community of Iowa fans would be appreciated..

The game I am inserting this modded Battleship into is called Command and Conquer Zero Hour, a game really set on its land battles.. I am hoping to have some fun with this, it should make my opening screen look better...

I will provide pictures of what it looks like tommorow, its getting late here... Im just basically going to seperate the hull from the superstructure.. Also, once I am done making the ship, I will provide beginning and ending pictures so you can compare the work...

Sure I know, a different approach to this project, but I like it..

That's one of my favorite games. I used to play Red Alert all the time.

I've always wanted to see a remake of that game with historically accurate weapons and units.

heck yeah! Red Alert, especially with the Aftermath expansion!

I've never played Zero Hour but i have played Generals. I wish it wasn't so land based, i always had a huge navy in Red Alert.

Warning 56k users, you may not want to go any much further down the page... Im not having any mercy on you guys anymore...heh :lol_1:

@Kenny- Yea, having large amounts of ships in Red Alert was great, always had fun with that, just wished we had CVs, but that came with RA2..

@Cadman- Well, theres many total conversion mods that are out there, its just alot of those realistic TCs never get finished because the people get burnt out of modding for quite a while..

Anywho, pictures of the "stock" "Iowa"..
I looked at the model last night, and the whole superstructure is just about messed up, the only good thing is the bridge.. and the radar mast..

2 views of the ship in the game, next batch of pictures will show the ship as it is now that I have started modding the ship..

I have Generals and Zero Hour, both great games. I agree with others though, not enough naval warfare...not really any.

Regarding the model. The model in the game isn't even an Iowa. The only part of it that resembles anything close to an Iowa is the hull shape. It's another example of game artists flexing their "creative freedom". It's interesting though, that the carrier ingame, looks alot like the new planned CVNx to be laid down in '08 I think.

Anyway I wish you success in your conversion work.

Ahhh...I loved that Somalia mission. Stupid burglars who broke into my house and stole ZH disc 1 :mad_1:

I did wonder what made the devs do a Panzerschiffe design.

@Chris- Really, they wouldnt be able to run this game if it had naval warfare at the sizes the ships were...for once they werent the size of about a tank.. :lol_spit_1:

@Timmy- I wouldnt know, but I guess it has something to do with the fact Generals and ZH can only use 2 turrets on a unit...which is lame.. :mad_1: not to mention it is easier than doing what I am, saves time on making the game...

Anyway, barely 5-7.5% mark now people!!
The hull has basically been extended, all of the surface content has been wiped except for the turrets... The skin still shows the outline of the superstructure, and the extension hasnt been UV mapped yet, so it looks nasty...

I am unsure whether I should let this unit have a helicopter or not, the deck will be there...

Steaming along....ever so slowly..
Kevin M.

BTW, the 3d editor I use messes up skins, so it doesnt really look like this in-game..

The turrets have been modified, the rangefinders have been added to the turrets, and they have been reshaped a little bit... Work on the superstructure has begun, and the turrets are in place really, so I will try inserting my modded ship into the game tonight, and get some pictures ingame...

Edit: Sorry all, got tired of modelling the ship last time I was on, since then I havent touched the ship... I will probably just keep on modelling the ship, not coding it till the end..

Edit #2: In order to make it up to you guys, Ill just post a picture of the ship as it is right now... Some of it hasnt been UV wrapped yet, so its kinda looking weird in some spots...

Well, after a self appointed break, I will restart modifying the ship either tommorow or Wednesday.

Sorry to any ship "watchers", just needed some time doing something else, nothing was really happening here...

Anywho, hopefully tommorow or Wednesday I will have some pictures of what I left before the break, and some newer pictures..

After what looked like an apparent quit, I am back in action.

For the first "Back in Action" update, the Turrets, 5/38 and 16's are the stars of this. The 16's have recieved their last (I think..) upgrade in matters of shape, and the 5/38's have made an entrance on the ship now..
Image

Yes, I did do this in a matter of about 20-45 minutes, have to go to bed eventually... (tis late at night here..)

Tomorrow should see the 16's skins reworked, and the 5/38's temporary skin in place... If anything else, the bridge should be prepared for the next part behind it, and that should be it..

Edit: W/E....smallish error...lol...

Hmm, no pictures for you guys today, only news on progress.

The 5/38s.. are a mess right now, you dont want to see them.... The UV Mapping process will probably take a while on this, not the turret, but the barrels..6 sides and 2 barrels...quite a while..

Mark 8 16s are the same, decided to keep EA's really bad scheme...

Bridge is still intact, as everything else is..

Hopefully on Saturday a picture with some more progress... Tomorrow I have to return a game, and I wont miss out on the chance to play it a lil bit longer... :heh: Right now, finishing the 5/38s, and starting on the bridge behind the main bridge is all that is planned for tommorow.

Also planned is to fix the nice little area of green in the center of the main bridge, check the last picture posted to see what I mean...

Thats all for today, hopefully more results on Saturday or tommorow...

For some reason, my modelling program keeps on crashing when I try to do something with the 5/38s, so those will be remodelled and I will have new pics tommorow.

Likely tonight, the green will be fixed, and that is all I have planned. Not ready to do the bridge yet, little bit too much right now...

Saturday is a update now, today went non-accordingly to plan...

^ BTW, that was me... I now officially hate the "ability to post even if you arent logged on" feature...

The green, now grey, has returned after I fixed it, so I dont know...
More of the bridge has been modelled, and a new skin has been started for the hull... (im just trying it on the guns and superstructure..)
Image
The rest of the superstructure, I dont know what to do with.. I might start designing the rear front part myself, and just go by the real version...

Only two more days of the ability to work on this all day... :wave_1: [/url]
