Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
In WWII there were radars (Mk-4 I think) on top of BB conning towers at times. Probably what was censored. Optics usually weren't censored as far as I know.

Another interesting point, the photographers location, would have to be out on the arm of the MK38 director!

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
Well, Uwe's photo link does show the curved railing aft of Turret 2 on the 01 Level. The photo indicates they are in the middle of anti-aircraft defense so Turret 2 (and 1 and 3) would probably not have been manned. The turrets are NOT used for anti-air defense (duh!!!).
Photographers had lots of opportunities to be hanging from various parts of the ship to get their shots - even being tied to the boat booms with the booms swung out to get shots of the 16" turrets in action to one side or another (NJ - 1968-69).

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
I don't believe the USN did this, but the Kriegsmarine and IJN both used main battery
Guns for AA defense, though who knows to what effect. I don't recall any aircraft being shotdown, though there might be some deterrent psychological effect. Possibly good for ships morale though the AA defense was so closely packed on USN ships that manning much of the light stuff and firing the main battery was mutually exclusive due to blast.

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
Okay most of the rigging is finished, or at least as far as I'm going to take it, except for a little more to do in front of the fore mast. I really don't enjoy rigging... I also got the mast and SK-2 radar installed.

Sorry, those aren't the best pictures. Also got my nameplate designed, thanks to my buddy Rick Brownlee.

Okay, on to the Mk37 Gun Directors...

The rigging looks really good Kelly. I very much like the surrender medallion on the base. Did you have this made or can you buy them? Overall it's looking really nice and I like the weathering very much. Great work.

Love the look of the Ms. 22 and he pristine teak!!!! She's a beaut man, keep it up
You can get those coins from the gift shop at Pearl. They have an engraving of the ship on the other side. One of our guys went there last month and traded some of BB-64's coins for theirs. The staff out there is awesome!

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
Kelly, I have a question. In the Pontos set you are given two of the checkered plate pieces that the anchor chain rests on. I think it's part number 882 or 883. One is provided in brass and the other in stainless. Did you use both of them or only one?

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
I only used one. I believe they gave you the extra because they were having some issues with the sheet bending during shipment.thudman wrote:Kelly, I have a question. Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
Thanks Kelly.I only used one as well and went with the brass one. What I did do was drilled small holes in the roof of each 16" turret so I could position the brass piece on top and flow the super glue from inside through the holes so it would settle down tight.Kelly Quirk wrote:I only used one. These 4 small parts took me all day Sunday to build. Not just a Sunday afternoon, literally ALL day.

Here they are painted:

Very clean, straight and exact work Kelly!
Are you gonna go for the Veteran bofors or use the Pontos set modificatons?

Only very minor issue I could see are the signal halyards which should be a double line with a pulley at the top. One can certainly see why the four MK37 directors and radars would be an all day project. Not apparent from your excellent macro photography how small they are! Result is quite convincing!

Re: 1/200 USS Missouri
I haven't decided yet... I'm really getting to the point where I want this thing done soon. How far do I want to go on a part that people will spend a half second looking at? Then on the other hand I want it to be as nice and detailed as I can make it. I keep flip-flopping.Channell wrote:Very clean, straight and exact work Kelly!![]()

You must have missed the part where I expressed my hatred of rigging.Fliger747 wrote:Only very minor issue I could see are the signal halyards which should be a double line with a pulley at the top.
