But there may be some funnel parts need to be modified.
These are C15(base) C6+C7(main funnel) C6+C7 and C4(upper) of fore Funnel.

You need cut and reduce the size horizontally 1.8mm these 4 parts.
After cutting, these will be the same size with C14 C16+17 and C3 of After funnel.

With this process, you can have two same size funnels without getting extra resin parts.
There may be some opinions that after funnel kit is smaller than original plan size.
But I think these are negligible small problems.

We may add these extra PE parts at our Hood advanced set.
The Basic set will have separate fore and after PE parts without cutting process because I think almost modelers will do easy way not cutting.

We have spent much time for this solution already, so there may be no more act for other suggestions. :wave_1:

Since the forward funnel is most likely the correct size, may I suggest that Pontos provides two sets of etch that are the same size of the forward funnel. The modeller can then cut the aft funnel in two, insert a piece of plastic to bring it to the same size as the for funnel, then using Pontos etch wrap both funnels in etch, hiding the extension. From here the top cap and base can be resized with plastic, and easily shaped. As long as we have two sets of etch, including funnel wraps, internal walkways, and funnel cap grills it can be done.

This is not perhaps for inexperienced modellers, however in regards to Pontos all they need to offer is an option to purchase a second set of forward funnel etch.

:heh: Only a small one, but trivial. Cutting the funnels for the advanced set is tricky and the fit of the parts may vary between modelers. If the fit of the funnel parts is critical you may damage the detailed walkway. I made this part to test the fit.... and it was quite necessary for me. For your consideration.

We would do cutting and reducing process though the fore funnel kit may the right size.
Main reason is to extending aft. funnel parts is too hard work and more extended after funnel does not fit on the structure deck( vs. reduced fore funnel is fit well).
Seeing other odd sizes or wrong shapes kit parts.
This small funnel size difference is negligible.

Additional detailed walkways and other PE parts will be included too. (Yep guiding template for matching size also good idea. I will consider.)

The only problem with the fit in regards to the for funnel sitting on the aft funnel deck house is with the funnel base. This isn't a problem as the aft end of the base can be flattened as it actually sat underneath the walkway that is moulded onto the aft funnel deck house. You could provide an etch walkway and modellers could remove the moulded on one.

You can check out the Trumpy 1/350 Hood to see what I mean regarding the fit of the base of the funnel on the deck house

Here is the base. I took out my AOTS book of the Hood and did some measuring. The Fore funnel is the correct size. Short by .5mm. The aft funnel base is the correct size.

Many thanks. That's pretty close to what I got, so the measurements are confirmed!

Now that we know the fore funnel dimensions are most correct, lets look at the "deck house" base (M1) of the rear funnel.

We know that it will not accommodate a correct size funnel without filing down the rear of the bottom flange piece (C15). Easy fix for most folks. Those who want it to be precise will probably want to take it a step farther by replicating that it didn't just end, it actually passed under a small walkway. So, lets also take a look at that walkway.

Below is a photo of an official plan. The plan was copied from an original held at Woolwich Arsenal. As you can see, the original front-to-back depth of the Disinfector House (the rectangular structure immediately behind the rear funnel) was @8.5 feet. Ultimately a smaller structure, the Motorboat Workshop, and two searchlight platforms were added in this area. This necessitated the addition of a narrow gangway to the front of the structure. This gangway was about 2 feet deep (Fore-aft) and spanned the entire width of the Disinfector House roof. This was the bit that overhung the funnel base flange.

Per my measurements, the updated depth, fore-aft, of the Disinfector House (including gangway) was about 10.5 feet.

A quick measurement of the model shows this same area as being 14.5mm or 9.6 feet if converted.

Hopefully this will help Pontos with the design of the small gangway.

I was just posting a similar reply in the thread about the funnel error when something occurred to me: both John Roberts and Maurice Northcott drew the two funnel base flanges as being differently shaped from one another. Both men depicted the rear funnel base flange as being rounded at the front, angled at the sides and flat at the rear.

Of course, the official Hood plans aren't 100% precise. They are VERY close of course, but sometimes, things were slightly differently shaped or oriented aboard the actual ship (case in point, the Torpedo Control Platform and rear/centre 4" gun splinter shields. I combine this with the fact that both men are very detail oriented and would not "guess" on the shape of a structure. They would have based their drawings on what was known at that time...and as both men consulted the very same plans that I have, it occurs to me that they might have come across something else (unknown to me) which made them divert from the plans a bit.

So, I shall not second guess my Jedi Masters...this padawan will be asking one or both why they drew the flange as they did.

Of course, this doesn't change the fact that there was still a gangway added to the Disinfector House nor does it change any of the measurements I just provided. It just may affect the shape of part C15. Lets see what they say.

Maurice told me that he deduced that shape from construction photos and discussions with other researchers. Of course, since that time (early-mid 1970s) the builders model has been restored and put on display and previously unknown photos have come to light. So, it would now appear that the rear funnel's base flange was not actually angled like in the drawings and in the 1/350 kit. It appears to have been rounded just like the fore funnel. The only difference is that its rear funnel flange's front and rear edges were truncated/clipped to allow it to fit.

Not that anyone would really notice if a model contained some scrap wood loosely stowed atop the vents (something done on the actual ship). That would pretty much hide the flange anyway.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set-Midships Deta

We have another detail to announce: Trumpeter mistakenly gave the MF/DF structure (part B50) a recessed roof. This is incorrect. It had a flat roof with slight overhang. See the image below.

Also note that the photoetch for the midship aerial spreader is incorrect: The centre arms were rectangular in cross section and were supported fore and aft by angle bars (L beams). There was also a shorter angle bar support which connected front the roof to the centre aerial spreaders (it as much short than the outer supports). The short center support connected to the forward face of the centre aerial arms.

Other details: please note that there was a ladder on the starboard rear corner of B50 (reaching all the way up to the roof overhang) as well as up the starboard side of the large aerial trunk cylinder (C8/C9). There was also a door in the port side of said cylinder. There were several insulators atop the cylinder (cluster of at least 4 in centre). Back near the ladder which ran up the MF/DF house there was a short antenna (included in the model kit). Please note that it has a round ball at its top.

Image

Overall, the roof should be an easy photoetch (or eve styrene sheet/card) fix: You can probably easily create an overhanging roof piece with a circular cut-out for the aerial trunk to pass through.

We can provide more details if you wish.

Note - I edited this post on 1 December to fix a broken link.

O.K. we have accepted these corrections.

Now we are searching any reference for the after structure part N2.

Part N2 has many errors and will definitely require a number of updates. Some of the work will be very easy for the average modeller to handle, but some may need new parts. We'll put some images together and post them here as soon as possible.

For now though, here is a brief list of what to expect:
1. There are too many windows around the top rear of the actual ACP...the kit has "8" little windows, but there were actually only 7. There was a device that hung in front of the centre/rear window and Trumpeter's source drawings appear to have mistook it for a frame
2. This same area of the structure is also not long enough on the port side...it should extend forward a bit more.
3. There was no "double step" between the ACP (top rear) and the large squarish area below. This can especially be seen from starboard). The piece of photoetch (PE-B11) for this area is totally wrong. The other side (port) is also incorrect (though the piece of photoetch used there - PE-B12 - is more accurate than the one from starboard). 4. The large vent on the forward bulkhead of N2 is a bit too small and shaped incorrectly.
5. The splinter shield atop N2 needs to be removed or reduced in some places- first, cut out the squares near the middle (both sides). Second, reduce the height of the splinter shields around the searchlights (and use a small segment of photo etch rail). This is actually easy work, but parts will be needed...signal lockers and mini railings.
6. There is a large angled roof support beam missing (it could be seen, albeit just barely, between the centre of the structure and the ACP area). This may be very difficult to recreate due to its location.

Other, minor things
1. The various liquid tanks attached to the structure could use some better detail (straps, better angled supports). THis is something most modellers could easily do themselves though.
2. The whole structure had rounded edges (modellers can take care of this with some sanding/filing...very minimal work).

I also think the starboard ladder from mid to top level was not present; I have no images showing it?

Here are the photos we promised you:
Image
The above image is an overview of main changes.

Image
The above image shows the biggest error on part N2- the "double step". There was only one step on the actual ship. Also shown are some other details...such as cutting out the flag locker, cutting out the the archways forward and of course removal of the ladder and door.

Image
This image shows the port side. This side is more accurate than the starboard side, but still needs work. The flag locker needs to be cut out, the step raised and the ACP extended forward. The ladder and door are correct. Of course, the modeler should also hollow out the searchlight doors.

Image
Shown here are the windows to the ACP at the top rear of the structure. There are too many windows...there should only be seven. The kjt also needs a fog/navigation light..

Image
This is a 1938 shot that shows the engine room vent and water tanks. They remained the same until the end. As you can see, the kit's vent is too short, incorrectly configured and under-detailed. The actual vent was taller, had a flat top (with hinged opening), angled grilles (top corners) and a "flange" around the midsection (near the lower part of the grille). Note that the vent and tanks are roughly the same height. Also note the mounting straps, angled underside supports, etc., on the water tanks.

Image
This is a 1940/41 shot showing the forward bulkhead of the ACP (part N2). Note the details, shape of vent, etc.

Image
Another view from 1938. The vent and tanks can be clearly seen.

One other thing I forgot to mention- not only do you need to remove the ladder and door on the upper starboard side, you also need to remove the non-existent hatch on the roof! Well, remove the starboard one...leave the one to port. That's how people got to the roof!

The part could use some extra detailing as well...cable trunks, lights, the canvas screen that ran around the large square windows at the bottom rear, etc.

Also note the fog light, HMS Hood carried two, as did many ships. This detail is often missed. The other fog light is on the aft jackstaff.

Also, I believe the water tanks on the front of the structure (wide end) were no longer present in 1941 but moved to the central area of the platform.
