They are called "Pit Logs" in the US Navy - no idea why. Maybe someone else can clarify.

The retractable part was called the "sword." They were typically hydrofoil shaped to reduce drag - something like the cross section shape of a sword blade. They extended deep enough to get away from the surface layer (water dragged along with the ship due to friction) in order to get a more accurate speed measurement. They were retracted in shallow water for obvious reasons.

My understanding is that "pit" is short for pitometer which in turn is a modified form of pitot tube. A pitot tube being a pressure sensor used to measure speed such as is common on airplanes. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I checked my drawings again ... the cross section is circular in the drawing.

I think I will file a flat surface to the front end at the tip and add a borehole to it for the nozzle, what do you think?

Hey guys, I love this! I have been working on the seachests for my 1:96 Oklahoma City and was wondering if I was the only one trying to model the bottom of a hull accurately.

thanks! I really look forward to see your build!

The seachest is somewhat simplified as you won�t see much of it on the hull bottom and behind the grill. The sea chest above the bilge keel will receive more time for an accurate reconstruction.

The attached picture shows a more realistic shape of the sea chest - transition from rectangular to circular cross section.

PS: I did it again: this is not the BB turbine, its the middle turbine outlet!!

Hi Bernd It's not often that you see this level of detail . I know Kiwi medic has put in the cooling water out lets . I trust that when you have completed the model you place a mirror beneath the keel .

I built the seachests for the cooling water outlet of BB and port turbines. Pictures show a first dry fitting of the sea boxes into the hull bottom.

very superb detail work,your bismark is a true labour of love .i would hazard a guess .but i doubt there is anouther hull built with as much underwater detail

thanks! Hull details are rarely seen, I guess a detailed hull is too sensitive for being damaged on a RC-model. It�s also hard to get the requiered info to do all the details. I enjoy details and my Bismarck will be a static model!

You can see one or 2 of these grills at the start of the film "Sink the Bismark. They show some news clips of her launch... but it looks like you already haave the info. The grill in the clip was a rectangle with rounded corners, as you've drawn. I just mention it FYI.

p.s regards the 'dock keels'. The plan for HMS LION (1910) depicts them. I've never known what they were... it's drawn as a keel that didn't grow to reach adulthood, if you follow.

I've never, ever seen the modelled before... ever!!!
