LOL

That is definitely one high resolution photograph to be able to get that kind of detail out of maybe .25 sq. inch of the original photo. Or is this pic not a blowup of a small piece of the pic below? If there are more photos like this one floating around, maybe the question of the linoleum can be answered yet. How about in this pic? Are any of the decks or platforms in question visible on the other ships remaining on Battleship Row?

ESzczesniak asks about the color of the decks in this photo, pointing out that they should have been 5-D on the Searchlight Platform. Yet in this pic both the MG Platform and the deck around the visible Searchlight appear to be the same color. That color seems to be quite a bit lighter than what we have come to think of as 5-D, unless they are really weathered and faded (entirely possible in that tropical sun), yet the color is definitely darker than what is on the top of the Fighting Top. The FT, SLP, and MGP are all in direct sunlight, and all are horizontal surfaces at the same angle to the sun. Two other options: One, that these are linoleum, which might be about this shade of grey in a B&W pic. Or two, maybe they were still Navy Deck Grey and never were repainted 5-D. I would be inclined toward the faded paint knowing how powerful the sun can be living in Southern Arizona. But I also know the Navy has a proclivity to continually wash their decks. So any buildup of oxidized paint enough to make a deck look this light would be unthinkable. So that leaves us with linoleum, or a different shade of grey for these decks. Or is there another possibility of which I am unaware (there usually is...)? Food for thought? Or more mudding of the waters?
I know there are many factors involved in picture interpretation, film type and speed, any filters used, etc... But in any one picture, at least in B&W, if there are two surfaces at the same angle to the given light source, and they appear to be the exact same shade of grey, especially side by side, then they are likely the same color. Conversely, if they are a different shade of grey, they are different colors. Yes, I know that a specific shade of red will look the same as a specific shade of blue, but we are not talking an infinite number of possible colors here. There were only five possibles at this time, and that is only if we include the possibility of linoleum and original Navy Deck Grey (and NOT counting Insignia Red for the turret tops, or anti-fouling red for the hull. I know some of you were thinking of it!

). So, given the limited possible combinations, and the disparity between these colors, what reasonable explanation can anyone else come up with to fit the facts given by this photo?
