Hi Bernd
The guy in question Richard Dunn is an acquaintance of a friend of mine in Australia.
In great respect for him he has forgotten more about lofting out and interpreting naval/marine
drawings than we will ever learn.
He does know what he is talking about.
We see a drawing and he sees far more detail than I thought was on the drawing.

yes, that seems to be a great work of Richard and Rafael! Until now I missed Richard�s work on BS! Is there a website or how could one contact him?

One problem is that the official line drawings in 1:100th scale are somewhat simplyfied, especially the cruicial waterline 0, which is shown "streamlined" in that drawing and thus is in other modelplans like e.g. Gally�s drawings. The original drawings of TP are not simplified in this respect. Best is to use the construction frame drawings in 1:50 and 1:25, at least on a static model.

You might consider posting your CAD model progress in the Virtual Ship Modeling part of the forum. It would be good to have more people posting their work there to show the steps to follow when using CAD to prepare drawings for real models.

added all sea boxes in the hull except those located in the bilge areas. I worked every evening and it is really time consuming. I had to relocate one sea box because I mixed up starboard with port ...

Fine tuning will follow after all sea chests and the bilge keels are in place.

I'm a detail kind of guy and I just love this build! It looks like the underside of the hull was hit by a shotgun. I had no idea there were that many openings. Outstanding work. Keep going!

its a designers nightmare to provide effective torpedo protection with all these holes in your hull

I think that all ships have quite a lot of openings in the hull for in- and outlets of cooling water, sea valves etc.pp.

I have posted some pictures of the underwater hull of the Cleveland class cruisers here:

There were twelve large sea chests (26"/66cm and 27"/68.6 cm) and nearly 40 total openings in the hull. All ships have quite a few openings in the hull.

The large seachests are for intake and discharge of cooling water for the steam turbine exhaust condensers - when steam condenses the volume reduces drastically (1/17 if I remember correctly) and the resulting partial vacuum on the exhaust side allows the high pressure supply side steam to pass through the turbines more efficiently. The condensed water is then recycled through the boilers.

Boilers require high purity water (better than drinking water) so some of the intakes are for distillation units that produce high purity boiler water. Sometimes there are also separate distillation units for drinking water. Other intakes are for fire and flushing systems, cooling water for diesel generators, etc. Older ships used sea water for toilets and showers. All of these systems add up to a lot of holes in the hull below the water line. Many of the water discharges were above the water line.

Hi,

did more work on the seachest. Prior to glueing all parts together it will receive a coat of brownred to its inner surfaces. I am really anxious to see how they look when installed into the hull - maybe this weekend!

109 this is certainly one of the most detail orientated models I have come across. I remember a model maker by the name of Jack Bidgood starting a 1:48 scale model of the frigate HMS Leander back in 1971. Each year he would bring various parts to the Model Engineering Exhibition in London to show progress. Every item imaginable that was on the full size ship was included on his. It was a work of pure dedicated genius. The years rolled by and eventually in 2003 he presented the completed model at the Model Engineering Exhibition gaining a plethora of awards including the highest score achieving the coverted Gold Medal . Sadly he passed away in 2006 only ever building one such model. But what a model!!.
