Calling all Essex-class (Cold War configuration) fans

Apologies if this matter have been discussed again but I didn't find any relevant discusion. So my question is this: I have 1/700 Flyhawk's super detail Essex set and I am wondering if it is applicable for Dragon's USS Antietam carrier. To me it seems it fits but better get a go for someone more experienced in this matter.

If you're talking about set 700-025 there are certainly things that would be applicable and should fit no matter what, but many things might not, such as the side-elevator trusses and structures.

Does anyone make a model of the Hornet as she is now? I would like to have a model of her as I frequently visit her and have yet been unable to locate a model of her in her present state.

You would probably have to convert another kit that is post SCB125 modernization to the Hornet. I think dragon offers 1 kit of this, but not 100% sure. Someone more knowledgeable may know of a resin kit or some such, but as far as i know your stuck converting other kits.

As a side note, im glad you enjoy visiting the ship. Im one of the volunteers aboard so i enjoy hearing that people appreciate our efforts.

The only model of Hornet in her present form would be to get one of the old revell kits. They did the same kit boxed as Yorktown, Hornet, Wasp, Lexington, Oriskany and Essex. That kit actually represents a pretty acurate SCB-125 Hornet. Depending on which kit you get, will detirmine what airplanes you get. Yorktown, Hornet, and Wasp were done as ASW Carriers with S-2 Trackers and Helos. Oriskany was done as a CVA with F-8 Crusaders and A-4 Skyhawks. I am not sure about Essex. I thought it was done as a CVA but I am not sure on that one. The scale is 1/540-ish.


There are no current kits in 700th or 350th scale.

The Revell ESSEX kit, H353-249, is as CVA. Has F9F Cougars, Hilo's, F-8 Crusaders, AD-1 Skyraiders, A-4 Skyhawks and F-11 Tigers in the kit. No S-2's - darn it.
I need to get a kit with S-2's in it. Need a sample so I can mold some for my ESSEX as a CVS when I was on it.

Hello again. This may be the last major uncertainties for my CV-37 built, that is about the configuration of 20mm oerikon guns during the Korean War.

I have made a research and is pretty sure about the portside, but is a bit unsure about the starboard side. As I notice from the portside that not all available positions were mounted with guns, I am not sure esecially about the starboard side since I only have blur photos of that period.

Below shows the result of my research. Those locations that I am unsure are highlighted in red.



I am especially unsure about the two platforms on the island. Besides, for the foremost platform at starboard side,
my guess is derived from the following photo but it is dated 1948. Was it the same during the early fifties?

Doing ESSEX as 1961 ASW as I served on her. The Revell #353 kit from the 50's is going pretty well. I'm looking for EA-1B Tracers, "Willy Fudd", to complete the air group. Does anyone know if any of the other Revell kits have that plane. Or is there an aftermarket plane (unlikly in that scale). If I could get one, I could cast more of them.

Did you try Starfighter Decals? Sometimes Mark T has some of those hanging around. He has done a lot for the old revell Essex SCB-125 kits.

SCB-125 Question; I am looking for pictures or drawings of the tie down arrangement on the HANGAR DECK. To rephrase that, the distribution of those little round recesses with the crosses in them, what is their spacing and layout on the hangar deck. It may be the same as before they were converted to SCB-27 and then SCB-125, I don't know. I have a General Plans Booklet drawing of the Hangar deck for the CVS-11 but it doesn't show the tie down layout. Any help would be appreciated, TIA

Has anyone tried to correct Hurrricane bow of the Revell Lexington kit CV-16, as she was when she launched Buckeyes and TA-4's? Can the hull be widened to correct misfit between the lsland elevator and side of hull? It make take some work, but is it worth it? Is anyone still building Carriers in 1/540 anymore?
