Calling all IJN Tone (利根) & Chikuma (筑摩) fans

Hi guys,

I have one little question:

On the enclosed deck where the torpedoes are kept, was the deck linoleum or metal? I suddenly found myself at that step in my build.

Impossible to say. No documentation that I know of.

I wondered this awhile ago. I went with it would not be linoleum. Seeing how it was not in direct contact with the weather.

It's been under plexiglas but still got a bit dusty. Anyway this what can be done using card stock;no plastic here. At time I could not locate plans or many photos and thus had to draw my own. Whereas I also couldn't find info on decking, I simply left it gray. May repaint the deck brown now that I have the info. Forget what scale I built it to but its about 43" LOA.

Below are two views -throught Plexiglas- of my all-card stock RC PTG in 1/2" = 1' scale.
The crew are plastic, modified from auto racing pit crew. 20 & 40mm scratch built. Card stock was waterproofed with fiberglass resin.

Found a YouTube video from November 2014 on Japanese heavy cruisers

It's about 12 minutes long with Japanese? narration. It is a video (not a collection of still images like some of the postings on YouTube).
It has some Takao class and other heavy cruisers in closeup; it shows torpedo firing, floatplane launching, secondary weapons firing, etc.

I pulled a couple still frames off it that appear to be of a Tone class cruiser:

Hi guys,

Is there a good diagram somewhere of these ships with regards to rigging?

I'm about to wrap my model up once I finish the turrets. A bit of surgery cutting off the guns and replacing them with brass ones. Fortunately, tissue and glue fixes the blast bags.

Well, FWIW, the online images that I'm aware of on shipbucket.com and on the-blueprints.com seem to echo the IJN plans (reproduced from the actual drawings) in Gakken #49. For that matter, so do those in Profile Morskie #13.

Still, Gakken #49 is the better reference, IMHO.

Good Morning Gentlemen,

I'm currently putting together a fleet of IJN ships in 1/700 that bombed Darwin in 1942.

Which would be the better kit to use of the Tone and Chikuma.

Not being good at judging which kit to use and looking at ebay most of them are 1944-45. If I have to use one of them what do I need to changed to backdate it Feb.1942 version.

Aslo what P/E sets can I get.

As you have already deduced, all of Fujimi's recent Tone/Chikuma kits (circa 2010+) are late war fits. Normally, that would mean just deleting the radars and additional AA, but these kits have a lot of molded on deck detail (like ammo boxes) that have to be removed as well. There are some other details that have to go as well, like the window vanes on the bridge.

The earlier Aoshima versions (late 1990s), are earlier fit. Conversely, they could benefit from a little more detailing.

Hello everyone,

First I like to introduce myself: my name is Alexander, and I'm from Munich in Germany and I have a question for all the experts -as i'm not- on IJN ships in this forum.
I bought Fujimis "Tone 1945" (# 401027) in 1/700 and Flyhawks PE Set (# 700192).
When I compare both instructions, there's a difference: Fujimi tells me, to use eight triple 25mm AA on the aft deck, whereas Flyhawk says to use ten single 25mm and two triple.
Now I Wonder which is right????

Flyhawk 700192 is meant for Fujimi kit 410166, which is Tone in October 1944: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10098695

That should explain the discrepancy. Whether Fujimi's count for the number of AA guns is correct is something maybe one of the others can answer.

Then I have a second question: is it difficult to backdate the Tone in 1945 to its design in Oktober 1944.
And what would I have to change?
