yes, these lines look strange, but basically they are present on all German capital ships. I sent you some drawings and you may be able to let us know what you think about it.

Thanks you. Last time I took a look at the lines of Tirpitz I didn't notice that. For well-faired hull, they do seem to be anomalies. In order to see how they affect the flow, you'd have to perform a hull flow calculation and see how well the pressure behaves. That's actually the best way to see how well a hull is faired as the pressure distribution is very sensitive to the geometry and would give is some insight if the effect of the knuckle is large.

But the fairing at the forefoot is pretty lousy anyway We try to avoid the lines leaving the keel at such an angle and always try to fair them into the keel plane. The flow is usually going down quite steeply over the first part of the bow running over the bow bilge.

Did the sea chests have gratings over them to fair them with the hull surface? This would minimize the disturbance to water flow over the hull.

The large size of the sea chest openings, compared to the diameter of the internal pipes, suggests a grating with the total area of the holes in the grating equal to the cross section of the internal pipe.

On some ships all smaller to mid size intakes have gratings, and some of the mid size exhausts have gratings. The larger intakes and exits are faired into the hull, with scoops on intakes to redirect flow into the ship and fairwaters on the exhausts to blend the flow back into the water stream.

Hi,

all seaboxes have gratings, I will post pictures of my PE-parts this weekend. Artwork see file attached to this posting. I reconstructed the gratings according to a photo I have. The large water intake do also habe gratings, but a wider spaced variety.

Will you be doing PE? I will using them only to a limited degree as they are not suited for all detail work ... in my view, however.
