The 1:120 row of four Orlikons came out really nice, the small detail holds up better in this scale. Basking under the grow lamp at the moment for a cure.

Tom,

WOW! You've really approached the 3D design concept with Vengeance!!! Well done! The 20mm mounts and Sky Lookout are really superb - Outstanding work, again!!

Thank you Hank!

I also printed some inclined ladders in 1:192 for my Missouri as I was short four. They came out quite nice, though the handrails have to be a little overscale for printing and fragility in this size, at least with my current knowledge level.

Thanks Pascal!

Still learning, one dealing with light and airy bits to learn to beef up at critical points. Just because in 1:1 scale 1/4" steel was used for a shield brace in the prototype, one should beef that up a bit for practical reasons. The Sky lookouts were much more successful being a scale 2" rather than the 1" or so of the prototype. I did print an open door successfully, but I think the frame needs to be more solid. Cutting an accurate open door manually to have the frame fit around (in prototype manner) would be very challenging!

Snowy evening! T

Ran out of my first half jug of black resin, lots of learning! Trying some prints from Aqua Grey 4K, might have to adjust setting! We shall see. The cleats I printed from the last of the black are nice, this ship has a lot of them!!

I mounted the Sky lookouts on the ship, but broke the last one... Arrgh! Below is a photo of one of the Oerlikons printed in 1:144. The 1:120 ones are a little more robust.

Hi there Tom and all,

I have just come across this awesome build !!!!!! I am speechless, simply speechless. The detail level is overwhelmingly amazing.

I have not been able to find out what for a scale is this. Maybe something in the 1/100 range ??????

Simply amazing.

Best regards,

Willie.

Thank you Willie! The scale is 1:120, which for the of us that use feet and inches makes for 1/10th inch to the foot. So I can measure something with a caliper in inches and read off feet without conversion. It's a good scale for scratch building, but not too huge!

Tom,

Those look like the real deal!!! Very nice, indeed. About how much resin did you put in the vat? I would guess that printing more scuttles would require more resin, correct (in spite of the lost resin at the base, etc.)?

Hank:

Normal filling is about 1/3 vat depth. The amount of resin used for the scuttles is very minor, maybe a couple of CC's? One can usually print several small ship part projects without topping up the vat. For some items more resin is an advantage as the solidified objects probably have only a slight negative buoyancy and have less stress on them as the platen raises. Along with these I printed several MK141 Harpoon Launchers.

By the way, thanks for the scuttle dimensions!

Chitubox slicer program can be set to know exactly the volume and price of the resin used.

Slicing processing time is increased because of this option.

Davits.jpg
A 1:120 and a 1:144 davit, as is stored against the aft deckhouse on a Fletcher DD.

These were printed horizontally and have good detail on the top but not the bottom. Note the cleat. On the 1:120 the eye at the tip is open, on the 1:144 it is not (at least to my vision). I am currently printing these vertically, which will take a while but will be an interesting comparison.

I work in my 3D Design program (DSM) in mm, having my calculator with a handy scale and translation fudge factor in it's memory. What I discovered working with a friend was one could use this program and design in inches. However when saving the file as an STL that chitubox can read (3D object) it takes the inches and reads them as mm's. So the only rectification at this point is to scale in Chitubox 2540 % !

It is Friday 13th, the year 2020, what could possibly go wrong?

Today's project is printing some more sky lookouts in 1:192, for another project, which surprisingly look like dead and shriveled mosquitoes and are about the same size. The other project in 1:120 for the Randall, APA 224, is the control boxes for the plethora of cargo winches. This ship has a lot of them! These should be better than the ones I hand made which are a small box on top of a turned shaft with a couple of pieces of wire for handles.

Maybe photos later?

These were printed horizontally and have good detail on the top but not the bottom.

It is best to print vertically everything that is mast etc. because the precision of the surfaces on the support side is rarely good.
It takes more time.
