Getting back to USN:

Still finding errors from Trumpeter kit. Stern superstructure had different ventilation exhausting channels between two BBs

Or I am wrong... Does anyone know where can I find a clear view of stern superstructure showing the vents?


Midship parts finished. Went for etching. Deck fittings also completed:







blastbags designed in 3 elevations: 0, 10 i 20 degrees. Higher level during Guadalcanal I assume was not necessary...

Why did you not make the rafts in 2 pieces, one Resin/3D-printed (the cloth-wrapped balsa floatation device), and a PE latticework for the bottom)?

That is what I was planning to do for my US Cruisers (and, may eventually do for this ship as well, adding to your PE set, if you produce this set to sell).

How will you deal with the gap Barbette to wood deck?

I have in the past solved that issue by wrapping a strip of styrene to increase the diameter of barbette.

Is the kit at fault--or the wooden deck?

Matthew - the rafts are still Beta version. I considered to add PE insert but I decided to make first 3D print test. Looks not bad but needs to be redesigned...

Jim - the laser deck is designed by myself and will be redesigned once again in order to correct barbettes holes. The kit has proper placement. I will make smaller holes and a bit displaced. Actually it is already done. But there is an error of Trumpeter on spardeck level. Location of 127mm AA unit.

I wonder why in so easy place there is so big error. There is nothing which required over or under scaling or moving. A lot of space around...
Anyway since I will create new spardeck with laser cut planking this issue doesn't bother me.


George - yes, I'm a part of ShelfOddity project.

Aekold - this is my design and after validation of dimension and quality check they will be available through SO. But IMHO they went out very good after first trial.

I am still trying to find plans for the South Dakota.

Floating Drydock lists a set (which says it is one of four) of the SoDak in 1941/42, but does not have the other three sets.

Since I am trying to do the SoDak from the Deck up, as you have done here, I would like to get the Trumpter Kit corrected, as you have done here.

Speaking of which, any progress?

Are the vent pipes your product or they are from the kit? Because it seems to me nobody makes correct vent pipes in 1/700 for ww2 USN, I would love to see your product filling this niche (especially for cruisers, and, if existed, dds)

the vents are not from the kit. This is my design. I guess (i'm not very familiar with USN vessels since BB56 is my first one) that on CAs and DDs vents are the same kind....

Just as a possibility, would you like some new Blast bags made for this ship.

The Draping on the Blast bags you have made just doesn't look natural (The Draping is as if they were pointing straight up into a vertical, and not as if they were pointing along a horizontal plane).

I could have them in a couple of days (I have a Washington, but have not yet opened it, to use as a reference for the Blast bags).
