I have been reading through this thread and thought I would chime in...wanted to know if anyone has any plans of the USS Independence CV-62 as she might have appeared in 1960. My brother Jim served on board as an electrician IC2. I am planning to make a 1/350 model as she appeared durring that time. I have plans of the USS Ranger CV-61 - circa 1978 and a photo CD of Forrestal class ships I got from the Floating Drydock. I also found some plans of the USS Forrestal from 1959 drawn by Edward Wiswesser. Thanks much! :wave_1:

thanks gtb-red,

I think 1/350 will give me a model thats not too big but not too small either. I completed a Sumner Class destroyer for my brother Ralph. DD-777, this was my first ever scratch build. I think it came out great. So I thought I would try my hand at a carrier and chose the Independence CV-62 because another brother Jim seved on board her. Both brothers were in the Navy around the same time.

I have been looking for some drawings that show the 5 inch guns that were positioned on the sponsons when the Indy was first built. My brother said that when he served on board there were 5 inch guns fore and aft, but during his service the forward guns were removed. I am tying to determine the position of the decks from the baseline. A good drawing of the hull stations would be nice too, something the covers the bow near the front perpendicular and near the transom.

I haven't started any construction yet, just been gathering information from as many resources as I can.

CV-62 hangar deck?

Post by Navarone »

Hi everybody,
I have been measuring the BOGP inboard profile drawing of the USS Ranger (CV-61) in order to determine the hangar deck or main deck distance from the base line. I have a known distance from the base line to the flight deck which I got from the outboard profile starboard drawing. The flight deck is 97 feet from base line. Now I know I am not supposed to scale the drawing but I don't really have any other option. If I measure along the base line at 3 points, AP, Centerline and FP the 97 feet measure an average of 6.25 inches. The drawings are 1/192 scale. Now if I use proportional scaling, the hangar deck distance measured along the same 3 points is an average of 3.91 inches which converts to 60 feet 8 inches.

My question is this: Do any of you who have served on board any of the Forrestal class carriers, in my case CV-62, know the distance from the baseline to the hangar deck or from the flight deck to the hangar deck? I would like to try and confirm my 60'8" dimension. I hope this request makes sense. :heh:

Now I am suspisious of this dimension for one reason. On the outboard profile port and starboard drawings there is call out for a wake light that is 60' 8-5/8 inches above base line and the hangar deck is shown above this light. (see image)

Thanks in advance for any info.

Navarone your going to build the Indy in 1/350 and I'm going to do the Ranger in 1/350. Let's start a post together on both these builds and see we get any vibes out there. Just a thought. :wave_1:

Sounds like a good idea gtb-red only I am not ready to start building yet. I am doing research and studying the plans I have, which are the USS Ranger drawings I got from the Floating Drydock. I haven't been able to put my hands on any Indy plans yet. I am several months away from starting my Indy build.

I have a existing project I am working on, USS Enterprise circa 1799, it's a Constructo kit. I am in the process of adding the deck fittings. Later comes rigging.

I would like to follow along on your build though.

gtb-red,

The answer is yes, I have a photo of the USS Forrestal showing two F4's side by side with wing tips folded up sitting on the aft starboard elevator. I found the photo on the Forrestal Carrier CD by Ray Bean of stillmotionphotographics. I hope he doesn't mind me using his name sake or sharing this small excerpt of the image.

I checked on navysite.de and pulled up the Ranger deployments and it looks like Ranger went from Demons and Crusaders to two squadrons of Phantoms on the '64-'65 cruise so it would appear that they never deployed with F-8's and F-4s. It also appears that they always had RA-5s instead of RF-8s as well.
