I'll play! Just ordered the Oregon from Pavel...lot's of guns!

Matt, make sure of your 8" barrels, I'm not sure of 1/350 barrels but I'm having a problem in 700 scale. The only replacement barrels in 700 are for the New Orleans class ships and are incorrect for the Northamptons. The Northamptons had an additional sleeve on the tube compared to the New Orleans class. Check this shot and compare:

Thanks for the heads up, that's why I went with the B&D barrels Vs. the Masters because of that reason. I have been in contact with Piotr Czerkasow from Masters and he said that he is seriously considering the Older Mk.'s for the Northamptons, 1st New Orleans and the Lexington in the near future. That is for 1/350 but I am sure since most of what he does goes hand in hand, I would be surprised not to see it in 1/700 as well. Didn't Clipper make a set for the New Orleans when Waveline did their resin kit? And have you tried BMK? I know Burkhardt(sp?) does some custom work, it might be worth you dropping him a line seeing if he has anything.

I have no idea of what other (than Masters) barrels are available in 1/700 for U.S. cruisers. If Piotr makes a set of barrels for the earlier 8 inchers I'd be more than pleased to get them. I requested assistance on the main forum looking for the barrels but the only source cited was Masters. If you have a link for anything else I'd appreciate it.

He has a set of 8/55's listed as for the Northamptons but looking at the photo, they are the later models. Like I said, I have e-mailed him before about some custom work and his prices were pretty reasonable, might be worth a shot.

I know I can't win anything by participating being that I'm a judge, but after I finish my Heller Scharnhorst, I'm going to dive into the Trumpeter Admiral Hipper. Plans include a wood deck from KA models and the WEM PE set. I plan on painting the ship in a really dazzlish scheme

This is where the Charleston is at right now. I added the breastworks and some skylight bases. On the guns, I'll admit I've cheated a bit: I made castings of Combrig gun mounts from the USS Baltimore kit. They came out all right I suppose. Still have some more to do.

I would like to join with the SMS Emden; the old Revell kit in 1/350. I've recently built the CA-38, so an older ship would be fun.

I've managed to start my Chih Yuen yesterday. The hull is a combination of layered styrene for the middle parts and my usual carved / sanded balsa for the poop and foc'sle. It took me some time to figure out the waterline shape of the hull as I only had a deck view of the ship and a limited number of pictures. Despite her small size the hull does look like a cruiser hull. Chih Yuen is quite similar to the 2nd class protected cruisers of the Melpomene class the RN was building at the same time.

If things pan out I will jump not this pool of awesomeness with a modernized Des Moines- class heavy cruiser. How about that?

Time for my part of the group build again (2 is a crowd...hint!).
2mm and 1 mm styrene strips as well as lots of sanding give the following result. Will be priming the hull tomorrow.

I never knew there were Group Builds on this site! I just started the infamous Hobby Boss 1/350 Pola this week for a Group Build (Cruisin' for a Bruisin') on Model Shipwrights! I jumped in late over there, as the build ends at the end of this month. I have pre-build kit pics along with pics from the last 3 days of building. Since this falls within the time frame alloted for this "Gun Cruiser" build, would you guys mind if I joined in the fun?

The 3rd shot is the parts I've got in work currently, the tape on the hull is to protect the paint during handling, believe it or not there are two colors on the hull besides black...5N and 20B. the 20B is painted over White Ensign's teak then lightly sanded to simulate wear. I haven't done any other weathering yet.

Chicago is looking good so far, any luck on the brass barrels? Those turrets... er... I mean Gunhouses look pretty good. I went to post some pics of where I am at on my build and something went wrong with the camera as I downloading the pictures to the computer, now my camera is dead . Hopefully I can get it figured out and working on my next day off. For quick verbal description of where I am, I have the forward tripod all set and dry fitted, I have cut the casting plugs away from the other superstructure parts and I have installed 9 very lovely looking brass barrels into the main armament. Now the biggest trick is going to be to stay focused on this now that the Dragon CVL 22 has just landed.

After looking, I did find that these images actually made it to the hard drive,

The first image shows the difference between the kit supplied white metal parts and B&D brass barrels installed The next couple are a comparison between the B&D Mk 9 barrels and the Masters Mk 12 The last one is a comparison between the Northampton class Gunhouse with the Mk 9's and a San Francisco Turret with the Mk 12's fitted. Hopefully more to come

Here's a quick early pic of my RM Pola. I knew there were a lot of problems with this kit, but for $7.99 it was hard to pass up! Well, now I can SEE the problems...and they are many! I only have a few reference photos of her from internet sources and I'm planning on picking up the Classic Warships Italian Heavy Cruisers. Right now I'm stuck deciding what's worth attempting to fix and what needs to be let go!
