Giampero (or anyone else) do you know if the platforms arround the 120mm guns in RN Vittorio Veneto is correct ? Trumpeter gives them as two separates platforms for RM Vittorio Veneto while in RM Littorio and RM Roma as a single piece.

Yes, that detail is correct :thumbs_up_1:

I think the odds are against us, as the tooling would be quite different. Usually companies issue sister ships of the first one produced when those ships share almost everything, thereby the production costs are radically reduced. In this case, with a whole new hull and a new bridge, this would need a considerable investment.
Anyway, we just have to wait and see

TR came out with Hipper not long after PE, and they had different hulls and superstructures. When I was in the hobby business I once asked a rep from Tamyia how they chose there modeling subjects and why there was such a long wait for naval subjects. He said Mr. Tamyia had been interested in naval stuff when it first came out but had gotten back to his main area of interest, armour modeling and radio control cars. Makes one wonder how much is business and how much is fellow hobbyests.

This has nothing to do with what we are discussing now, but...

Am I the only one to have thought about a Whiff of Impero in, say, 1944?

I would start from a Roma kit and do the following alterations:

- Modified stem
- 65 mm single AA guns instead of 37 mm twin mounts
- 20 135 mm DP guns in twin mounts instead of the 152 mm + 90 mm arrangement
- A "Claudus" paint scheme (inaccurate for 1944, but, finally, who cares? :heh: )
- RE 2005 instead of RE 2000 on the catapult

Besides, Regia Marina was experimenting some other quite interesting AA toys in 1943, such as a sextuple 20 mm mount, designed for CV Aquila, and a quad 37 mm mount, for the DDs of the Comandanti class... You may want to consider them for your Impero Whiff :heh:

The 135mm DP twin mounts could be the same used for the Capitani Romani class light cruisers ? Or like the ones intended for Comandanti Medaglie d'Oro class destroyers and Etna class light cruisers ?

Each class of ship had a different mount, even if the gun was the same: Capitani Romani twin mount (model Ansaldo or OTO '38) had its elevation limited to 45: it was not designed as a DP mount, perhaps because the 65/54 guns that they had to embark according to their plans were deemed sufficient for AA fire; delays in the developement of this new gun led to the 37/54 single mounts being used instead.

Image

The Comandanti Medaglie d'Oro too had their guns limited to 45 of elevation; besides, those were in single shielded mounts. The same were to be embarked on CV Aquila and on the destroyer Premuda (ex Dubrovnik) to replace her Skoda 140/56 guns whose ammo was being depleted.

Image

Then there was the triple mount for the Duilio, model OTO 37, this too was not foreseen as a DP mount

Image

Finally, the only DP mount: the last version developed for Etna AA cruisers and the rebuilt Conte di Cavour

Image

The turrets of the Etna class was almost identical to that of the Capitani Romani, while on Cavour the old 120/50 turrets were retained, coupling the 135/45 guns on what seems like a single-sleeve arrangement.

Finally, the rebuilt CL Garibaldi had a pair of fully automated 135/45 DP twin mounts installed in place of her fore 152/55 turrets.

Image

I've also found a photo of a 65/54 mount, preserved at La Spezia (it's the gun on the left; on the right there's a 100/47)

So Im guessing the RM Impero will had the Etna class DP mounts. And the 4 single 120mm for illumination will be also deleted in RM Impero.
So I need to cast them but I need some good photos of them, is there any available ? Thanks in advance :thumbs_up_1:
Oh and by the way, the 65 mm single AA guns will be the only light AA armament in the RM Impero ?

Well, in fact that twin mount was never produced, so we can guess it would have been similar to the OTO '38

Image

I also think that the 65mm would only have replaced the 37mm twin mounts, the 20mm would have been mantained.
But we're talking about a second degree whiff: if completed, the real Impero would have been identical to the other ships of the class...

By the way, anyone can name the type and the purpose of that small rangefinder (red circle)?

That was a 3 mt. rangefinder; I've read that it was only a backup, so I assume it was intended for the secondary and AA armament, as the main guns had their own.

Eduard is sated to release a PE set for Trumpeter's ROMA 1943 kit in 1:700 scale. This is found on both Pacific Front and Stevens Int.'s websites, but listed as pre-order and awaiting stock respectively. It's about time an affordable set was released for this kit! I bought this kit when it first was released over a year ago....still waiting for PE that doesn't cost an arm and a leg..... Thank goodness for Eduard. Flyhawk will follow suit? I hope so.
