USN Countershading

Hi everyone,

Reading through some history of USN camouflage measures in World War II, I've seen where some of them, like Measure 22 called for white to be used to countershade shadow areas of the warships thus painted.

Does anyone know of any photographs showing how this was implemented? I don't think I've have ever seen this. Maybe it wasn't widely done, but I'm not sure.

Here is an example on a FLETCHER .... NEWCOMB (DD-586) ... of course her stack had to be blown over on its side by a kamikaze to see the underside of the searchlight platform.

It was done a lot more as a part of the dazzle schemes than as solid or graded schemes like Measure 21 or 22. I've heard of a Fletcher that had countershading in Measure 21, but have only ever seen shots of countershading in the Measure 3X dazzle schemes.

Carrier flight deck overhangs and catwalks are a good place to look as well:
