New guy here with a couple of questions.

Post by Guest »

Hey guys, this is my first post here. To fill you in on where I stand on ship modeling, I've just recently been bitten by the 'saltwater bug', also known as the 'boat bug'. Apparently I had an underlying love of ships I didn't know was there because all of a sudden I've found them of great interest. My interest is strictly WWII and some pre WWI. I know nothing about all things naval and have a lot to learn. Just like I needed to get into yet another genre! So now I've got to start collecting not just kits but aftermarket and books, books and books....

Anyway, I have several 1:72 sub kits and I'm currently working on a Special Navy/Hobbies Type XXIII. I find this to be one cool looking sub and want to put a lot into it. The limber holes are open but the thick plastic takes away from the look so I thinned the plastic from the inside to give a thinner scale effect. Once I did this I realized you can actually see inside the sail so I added some piping 'shapes' just to give the illusion of something there. These represent the snorkel mast and the loop antennae mast plus some pipping per some drawings that are inside the sail. Plus the tunnel for the crew access to the pressure hull. Also on the belly there are some small openings where you can see the pressure hull. So I'm going to simulate that too.

My question is, what color would these areas have been painted? These are areas that once built (the real sub) will no longer be accessible for maintenance in painting. Though they will show very little, there are some close enough to the limber holes you can see them. Again, I know nothing about naval subjects so I'll be asking the most basic of questions in the future.

To kill two birds, let me ask also about a Destroyer Escort. I bought Trumpeter's 1:350 USS England DE365 and a GMM PE set. After poking around the net I found out what the molded on objects were in the kit to be K gun arbors. The PE set gives parts to scratch your own for more detail. What I wasn't able to find however, is how these were mounted on the structure walls (spare ones). Does anyone have any info where I could find a picture showing this? Like I said, I'm just getting into ships and have almost no books...yet.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Can't answer for the u-boat, but this should answer the one about depth charge arbors:
