My first Picture Post: 1/350 DE-150 Edsell Class

Inspired by the book A Measureless peril, I decided to convert Trumpeter's England kit into the author's father's ship, DE-150, which figures prominently in the book. It was a fun build, utilizing GMM PE, several L'Arsenal details, and hybrid 20mm's using some of the Model Master parts with Dragon parts. I love their 20mm barrels, but the rest of their assembly is insanely difficult.

The water is my usual method: wavelets represented by acrylic paint textured with a sponge, covered by a couple coats of Future. Bow and wake waves built up with acrylic gel medium.

Looks wonderful. I am building the same kit (another England) and am on the rigging stage, but have never done it before. How did you mount the rigging to the deck? Did you use the the Eye Bolts from the GMM PE set? Again, looks great.

The rigging thread used is mostly Caenis thread, with some stretched sprue. Rigging was affixed to the deck in holes drilled with a pin vice and a #80 drill bit. Other lengths were attached to things like railing stanchions, as described in David Griffith's book. In each case, the line was anchored with a tiny drop of CA glue. I contemplated using the GMM eye bolts, but discretion proved to be the better part of valor.

Excellent work! I, too, love the way the water turned out. What modifications did you make to represent an Edsall besides correcting the funnel?

Thanks for the kind words! Modeling water is one of my favorite parts of ship modeling. Right up there with finishing!

Basic modifications included substituting a L'Arsenal twin 40mm for the 1.1" mount. There are some good shots of DE-150 available (for example, page 28 in Squadron Warships #11), so I tried to replicate as many specific details as possible, such as the extra set of 20mm ready ammo lockers for the aft tub, what I believe is a galley stack just below the torpedo loading crane, the air duct just aft of the stack, and the particular style of prop guards, among other things. There are some decent drawings of the Edsall class in the Floating Drydock Warship Special that helped, for example, in getting the correct orientation of the depth charge ready racks for that class, which differed from, say, the Buckley class.
