How about a 1/200 warship group build?

Post by Channell »

Is there anybody interested in doing a maybe 1 year long 1/200 scale group build? I've never participated in one but it sounds like it could be fun and helpful...

Sure, as long as the time window for the group build is nov '13 - sometime in say 2016, then I think there are a reasonable amount of us who could finish a project in that time frame!

I'll go for that! It would just be fun to share without making a huge ugly build log for just one ship.

Nobody panic, and yes, I have totally lost it but I'm gonna do another 1/200 Bismarck. :twitch:

OK... I've never done a group build on this forum but it looks like things are pretty laid back as far as rules and don't need any kind of admin approval so here we go!

How about these general rules?:

You can do anything, as long as it's meant to travel on (or under) the water, could exist in reality, at least starts from a commercial kit (no 100% scratchbuilds) and is 1/192 - 1/200 scale. Something packing guns would be nice but civilian ships are OK too. It can only be built by 1 builder, construction must begin after the starting day, progress pics posted fairly regularly and the build obviously has to be completely finished (not just abandoned) and declared as such to qualify for a vote.

The group build will tentatively start January 1, 2014 and will end January 1, 2016, when the apocalypse hits or when everyone gets bored of their build and the thread dies of "natural causes". :heh:

At the end, we'll do a forum-wide vote for those who finished... maybe we could get an admin to tally votes by PM or something to keep it fair. I am willing to put up a prize and mail it out to the winner too.

I was thinking about sending a new kit from my stash (as long as I don't have to send it to Timbuktu for several hundred dollars shipping, anyway); I've got an Italeri 1/35 PT 109 that I haven't touched and will probably never get around to doing that I can offer up.

Sound good to everyone?

It seems that the "group build" thing has sort of died out recently. Not sure if it is because it has it's own sub-section and is not as visited as when it was under the WIP thread before or what. that being said, IF enough interest is generated, I know that site sponsors have in the past offered some prizes as well. If this thing gets up and running, count me in (eventually, but likely not till late 2014 with either a Bismarck, Missouri, or Arizona).

Yea, this place IS dead. Maybe a 1/200 project is too big for a group build anyway; in other forums they usually involve smaller projects that can be finished in a couple months or so.

I'm giving up the idea; I quietly started my next Bissy last night. Sorry Ryan and Jag... it just ain't gonna work. :pout:

Rare has been a group build where everyone started at the same time - more often than not, it's simply a way for everyone to know that they're all building a shared subject area, rather than each going through it together in lockstep!

1/200 is a well known scale for tugs and research vessels (Heller Le Suroit for example). I have few of them in my stash so I might join if it happens.
