HMS Triton Frigate, 1773 and HMS Pegasus Sloop, 1776

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if period ship models are welcome in this forum, which seems dedicated to steels ships, but I thought it wouldn't hurt if I shared some progress pics of my current project, a scratch-built plank on bulkhead (POB) model of the 28-gun English frigate, HMS Triton, launched in 1773.

I've been working on plans from a period ship modelling site, but decided to slightly modify these using the original draughts which I got from the National Maritime Museum (NMM) at Greenwich.

As with most scratch builds, everything starts with purchasing copies of the contemporary plans from NMM particularly the ones below:

I uploaded these plans unto a CAD program, checked/corrected any distortions, then used them to trace my bulkheads and centerboard, which would serve as the framework for my model:

Once all the bulkheads and centerboard have been traced, it was just a matter of cutting them on a scroll saw and gluing them together:

Nothing wrong with "wooden ships and iron men".

As someone who simply glues pieces of plastic or resin together, I'm always awed by the work of modelers such as you. We have all too few wooden ship builds but there are a few. Here's one:

Special thanks too to the Captain, he's our Top Honcho at the MSW forum, the source of majority of the plans that I will be using in the future

This is my first attempt at designing my own hull from contemporary plans so I decided to play safe with double planking. The first planking was done using cheaper lime wood and if the hull shapes up well, I'll use some better timber and plank in a more "ship-wright" manner for the second layer.

So far, the shape of the lower hull seems acceptable enough to warrant proceeding to framing and planking the gun ports, the photos below show the current state of my build after about a year of work(sorry for the poor quality cellphone photos )








By the way, pardon me for this off-topic question, but is there a way for me to edit the title of this WIP log? If possible, I would like to also include in this log the progress pics of my other build instead of starting a new thread for it. It's an HMS Pegasus kit with a bit of bashing using NMM Plans as well as other contemporary and secondary sources:

Hi Guys,

So sorry for the super long hiatus, wooden ships can be a bit of a drag to work with as shaping, bending and gluing each and every piece of plank tends to test your patience LOL.
Anyway, I hit a major bump on my build as my computer crashed and took all of my CAD files/plans down to Davy Jones' Locker
I did manage to get some work done so I can do some update my build log. As can be seen, the shipyard is bit of a mess as the loss of my plans really threw me off my game.

I was lucky enough to be able to mark the level and positions of the gun ports as well as the proper level and angle of the bowsprit before the great computer crash so I stil have a chance to at least complete the shape of the hull. My practice of printing only one copy of the elevation drawing then throwing it away when it gets dirty really came to bite me in the behind LOL. I always thought to myself that I could go back to the files and just print another as the need arises. If I knew my computer would conk out, I would've printed a dozen copies LOL.
Anyways, no use crying over spilled milk, here's the hull with the first planking almost complete and the bowsprit dry fitted. The un-planked space represents he level of the gun ports.

With my Triton's first layer of planking mostly done, it was time for another tedious chore: framing the gun ports. Here is one done, just about 2 dozens more to go... it's times like these that I am thankful I am building a 28 gun frigate and not a 100-gun ship of the line LOL.

Hi there, so sorry for the late reply, I have been on prolonged hiatus after encountering a major bump in my build, as explained above. I would be happy to send you the drawings that I made free of charge, unfortunately my PC crashed taking all of my CAD files with it.

Anyway, here is the last work that I have done on my CAD drawings before the crash. It was a draft of the stern windows as well as the blank stern section without the carvings. Luckily, I placed some reference measurements of these particular drawings in 1/64 scale so I may still be able to salvage and print them.
