Hasegawa 1/700 IJN Haguro - building from Myoko - COMPLETE

Post by SilverGhost »

Hello!
This is my first WiP on this forum.
My name is Andrew Kuznetsov
I'm Russian ship modeller from Moscow, Russia and I'm content administrator of biggest Russian model and walkaround sites Scalemodels.ru and Walkarounds.scalemodels.ru

This project is only fourth in my life.
IJN Yamato 1/350 in 1998
conversion of USSR destroyer Reshitelniy 1945 (Project 7) from model of Chinese destroyer in 1/200 in 2003
conversion of battleship Sevastopol 1914 from Zvezda 1/350 using many etched from North Star Models, Flyhawk, Rainbow, resin sailors and scratchbuild parts in 2015-2016
Previously I collected only planes (over 50 in 1998-2008).

2 years ago Wargaming presented me a model of japanese heavy cruiser Myoko.

universal decal for all cruisers in class. But it doesn't contain different onboard numbers for seaplanes

First of all, I buy Flyhawk super detail set 700091 for this model

And etched deck Flyhawk 700092

Then, I bought
7027 Rainbow Fixing Ring of Flues for fixing pipes on funnels
Image
Image

700037 North Star Models Hatches for soviet navy
Image

700020 North Star Models Perforated steel superstructure
They were need to replace Flyhawk IJN brass strip. Flyhawk strips were out of stock in Russian, Japanese and Chinese online stores
Image

Flyhawk IJN Ventilator II 700161 and IJN Ventilator III 700162
Image
Image

On Myoko-class crusiers were 10 different types of ventilators. But Flyhawk makes only 3.
It's not a problem, because other 7 types were similar.

Flyhawk 700004 Anti-slide deck
Image
In the model and Flyhawk detail set on the nose section of deck there wasn't antislide imitation. On plastic was wrong imitation.

Then at HLJ I bought fantastic plastic AA-guns from Fine Molds
WA-01 Double and triple 25mm AA-guns
Image
Image
For cruiser at spring 1942 needs only 4 double 25mm AA-guns

Searchlights WA-05
Image
Image

Single, double and triple 13mm AA-guns WA-15
Image
For early war cruiser need 2 double 13mm guns.

Resin Rainbow aftermarket
7116 IJN Type 92 Quadruple torpedo tubes
Image
Image

7088 IJN 9m cutter
Image

7087 IJN 11m cutter
Image

7085 IJN 11m cutter
Image

7103 IJN Paravane large size
Image

and Master 127mm barrels

And this is my main literature sources to convert Myoko to Haguro

Wow you going all out on this, I'm sure it's going to be so satisfying getting all that PE on the ship

I have Fujimi's Myoko class ships with PE too so I'm gonna be watching this build.
You are very through in the pictures you take so I'm sure I can get a few pointers when I do my builds sometime down the line

Agreed. One question, why the title: building Haguro from Myoko. Aren't you going to build Myoko? Or, did I miss something?

Short story "Why I decide to build Haguro" ;)

When I first open the box, I saw that decal sheet contains the names of all 4 sister-ships.
Most of modellers build Myoko or Nachi in 1/350 and Myoko 1/700 scales. The reason is simple - Flyhawk detail set in 1/700 designed for Myoko at 1944
Making the same as other - is so boring for me...
Hasegawa's model unified. Sprues A, B, C, D, W the same in Haguro, Myoko, Ashigara and Nachi rebox.
The differences between boxes are in sprues E/K (Myoko), G/J (Haguro) and other sprue letters for Ashigara and Nachi.

For example instruction and sprues for Haguro. Differences marked in red

For me it's not difficult to convert these details to needed cruiser.

But Flyhawk detail set allow to built only Myoko. But most of details fit for Haguro and Nachi. Except bridge, derrick crane and some other small details
Only Ashigara couldn't be built from this detail set. Reason - turret roofs.

So I have a choice of Myoko, Haguro and Nachi
When I was young, I read all the volumes of books Samuel Eliot Morison about War at Pacific. Battle of the Java Sea are interested in me. Heroes battle began cruiser Nachi and Haguro - who sunk light criser HNLMS De Ruyter, destroyer HNLMS Kortenaer and involved in destroying heavy cruiser HMS Exceter and destroyer HMS Encounter. Haguro have intense combat service with many battles - Coral Sea, Eastern Solomon, Empress Augusta Bay, Philippine sea, Samar. And finally Haguro was the last major Japanese warship to be sunk in battle during the war - 16 May 1945 at Malacca Strait.
And my choice was Haguro.

Nobody converted Myoko or Nachi to Haguro in WiP. Therefore expected that this project will be interesting for me and others. Especially after my previous ordinary built - battleship Sevastopol.

That is a very reasonable explanation. What year fit are you planning?

I want to built Haguro at this interval 04/28/1941 - 03/20/1942
Image

After that 03/20/1942-04/08/1942 Haguro had refit at Sasebo.
And I don't know that was changed on cruiser at this refit.

What I need to do?
- 2 new 3.5m AA-gun directors (maybe scratchbuild, maybe buy)
- replace 6m main gun rangefinder from director and scratchbuild it's new platform
- bobtail foremast
- change derrick crane on maintop (Rainbow etch for Japanese cruisers)
- rebuild bridge
- change platform at maintop
- replace portholes and scuppers on board
- remove Myoko's degaussing coil and make new degaussing coil
- make some differences at main gun turrets (railings, roof platfrorms etc)

and... CHECK all Hasegawa and Flyhawk details by photos...
There are many mistakes.

Assemled hull
Image

Bottom section is shorter than abord of 1 mm
at nose and middle - bottom wider than hull
at aft - more straight than hull
It needs Mr. White Putty or superglue

I marked red deck sections there Flyhawk didn't make photoethed parts
These sections I would make with North Star Models brass strips and Flyhawk anti slide

The deck is joined to the body without slots

I remove all aldders, anchors imitation at aft, all scuppers at bulge.
And make new imitation of nose/aft sections of bulge with 0.13 mm Evergreen plastic
Hasegawa don't make bulge imitation below waterline and make too short imitation of bulge above waterline.

New deck under torpedo tubes and bulkheads were made from Evergreen plastic 0.5 mm
The thickness of the board around embrasures was reduced
Torpedo tubes can rotate
