Iowa 5" mount colors 1943

Post by Scott56 »

Are the barrels all haze grey? I've looked at some pictures and seen some with a black band at the end. I've searched the site and did not find anything. I know the mount is haze grey and deck blue.

Thanks!
Scott

Could the black at the end be scorch marks from firing?

Are you referring to the cloth covers put over the ends of the gun barrels that could be fired through if necessary when there wasn't time to remove them? On some ships, like destroyers, these were attached with all sorts of fasteners.

The 5" guns were grey all over.
The black bands are black canvas boots that covered the muzzle opening.
They are still using them today aboard the museum
