USS Arizona Confusion

Post by Nils Burkland »

Hey ship modelers! This is my first post here, so please go easy on me. I am building the Trumpeter 1/200 scale USS Arizona. In fact, my research brought me here in the first place and I have learned quite a bit from you all. I have a problem though that I need your help with. I have seen the discussion (arguments, fights, wars) about what color the ship was on December 7, 1941, and I have decided that I am going with 5-S with 5-L tops. My issue is that, while there are plenty of posts out there offering evidence, opinions and other great information on the history of those colors, I can not for the life of me find what paint will best represent those colors on a model. As I've said, I am going with 5-S and 5-L and I have bought (guessing) Vallejo 70.898 Dark Sea Blue and 70.990 Light Grey. I just received them today and I have to say, the blue looks awfully dark grey and the Light grey looks closer to haze grey, so I am have some doubts about my choices. Are these right?! If not, does anyone know what Vallejo number would be better (I like Vallejo paints and live in the US so are easy for me to get)? Thank you all for any help you can give me. This is a really great forum and I look forward to posting some progress of the build.

I'm a 5-S kind of guy. I think there may have been areas still in the darker gray but which areas?

Take a look at the old Synder & Short paint-chip sheets.

One source is here http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/bo ... usn-1.html

If you want to be right on the money, buy a paint chip.
