A real treat this weekend on the History channel with all the Falklands footage, got a few laughs too at the goofs: HMS Invincible with her Island on the PORT side?? Don't think so, someone got the footage in the wrong way methinks. And Sheffield sailing serenely along with a 1022 radar? If only! She might still be afloat.

Captain Salt as usual caused me to throw something at the TV, he has spewed some bull-smelly-stuff over the years but this was a new one: "As soon as we switched on the EW gear we aquired the enemy aircraft and missile with our radar." So is he now saying the EW gear was off as well as the 965? Since the 965 was off so he could phone home and it interfered with reception I presume the EW was off as it interfered with his coffee maker.

I followed the war closely at the time and have read what seemed to be the better books on the subject. Yet, I have never learned WHY Salt had his detection gear switiched off to talk to London. Yes, I gather it needed to be off, but what subject would a ship on radar picket duty protecting the bulk of the task force have to speak to London about? It doesn't add up. He was told to expect missle attack, that is why Sandy Woodward put him out there. Has the subject of his talks with London been released to the public?
In most other respects the RN covered itself with more glory in a campaign it was ill suited to wage so far from home with a force of ASW ships against land based airpower.
