To camber or not to camber

Post by simon b »

I will shortly start work on a 1/96 RN Type 42 destroyer. The question is whether i depict the deck camber or not. I assume this will make things a little harder (This will be my first semi kit) and the ship will be built for display rather than R/C

That is your decision. I don't think it necessarily will make it harder, just different. Look at your subject, is the camber noticable? Do you want it to be an exact scale replica, or are you satisfied making that compromise? Try making a mock up section of part of the deck, one that is flat and one with the camber, what looks better to you?

If you where making an R/C model, the camber would also serve a practical purpose. So that leads to the most important question. Why not an R/C model?

No matter what you decide, make sure you post pictures of your project!

Hi Simon ,

at that scale , if there was camber on the real ship , you have to represent it , it is one of the most important feature on a model ...

look how camber good looks :

it is not difficult at all , just try it ...

Interestingly, the real USS Constitution's spar deck was originally built with camber but at some point in her history that deck was replaced by one without camber. The ship will soon be undergoing another restoration to achieve more of her War of 1812 appearance and the camber will be restored. The restoration is scheduled to be complete in 2009.
Have fun, Monkey around. TM

In 1/96, and specially, if building for display only purposes, I think that you MUST add camber to your deck.
