Paint matches for JMSDF colors

I don't know how popular this thread will be, but if someone can answer my question, it would be appreciated.

What are the accepted colors for vertical and horizontal surfaces on JMSDF destroyers? I'm thinking that they are pretty close to USN modern colors, but not exactly.

I know that the WEM matches for the JMSDF colors have been discontinued, but the best matches for me have been:

Horizantal: a noticeable shade darker than US Haze Gray. I used Polly Scale Dark Gull Gray.

Vertical: I have been on a JMSDF ship before, and normal vertical surfaces were not much darker then the horizantal one. I ended up using Polly Scale British Ocean Gray.

Helo deck: Gunship Gray.

The initial post:

I would like to know what the cross over color for JMSDF ships are in the following brands: Tamiya, WEM, and Model Master/Testors
One suggestion I was given was White Ensign models color M14, with JMSDF Deck Grey being M15. FS35237 Medium Gray. Does this sound right and what would a good cross over to the other brands would you recommend?

I have settled on Tamiya XF-20 and XF-54 for the JMSDF DD123 build. The reason why is based on the color chart I found at

I'm posting it here to help anyone who may have the same problem I did in trying to cross match colors that may no longer be avalible or may not be in production.

My appreciation for ships of the JMSDF has been growing slowly, but steadily. I don't have a definite answer to the question of color, though I do have several guides at home that I will look at.

I did look at the paint call outs for PitRoad and Tamiya: PitRoad indicates two different modern greys and has formulated paints accordingly. The callout from the Tamiya Ohsumi kit indicates Haze Grey as the main grey. Their match is TS-32.

Toshifumi Kimoto has long been a pre-eminent modeler of the IJN in 1/700. He has branched into the modern JMSDF as well and has several excellent builds in his galleries, along with build logs. See: http://homepage2.nifty.com/vanguard/

Model Graphix just published a volume dedicated to the JMSDF and Toshi-san built all of the models depicted in it. I have it & highly recommend it to fans of the JMSDF. Here's one link: http://www.hlj.com/product/MDG23054

According to the Model Art IJN Paint Camoflage Guide translation, modern paint technology allowed greater standardization of paint for the postwar JMSDF and in 1957, a std. grey matching Munsell color #5 for ship's hull was specified, as was a dark grey for ship's deck matching Munsell #4.

I do intend to write Toshifumi Kimoto for information.
