I have tried to simulate black caulking for my Trumpy Hood wooden decks trying the method of scoring lines in a wood deck tan paint over black using sewing needles glued to a holder at 1mm between points. At present I am not having any success as the top layer seems to flake away from the black paint undercoat and looks awful.
I am thinking that perhaps the paint I am using is wrong. Tamiya Acrylic on matt black from a spray can, non Tamiya.
Anybody got any ideas, they will be most welcome?
Strip the deck and repaint wood tan, do any highlighting or drybrush toning you want fo a wood effect then seal with clear gloss acrylic, I prefer Pollyscale. Now make a mix of oil paints....use mars black (NOT lampblack, it will clump), raw and burnt umber, burnt sienna and a touch of titanium white to lighten it just a tad, basic amounts are pea sized blob of black, 1/3-1/2 pea sized blobs of the umbers, 1/4 pea sized blob of sienna and white to your liking........put these in a securely capped glass bottle and add Turpenoid, the amount of paint given works for 1.5-2 fluid ounces of Turpenoid........shake very well. Use a fine point brush and apply drops to the recessed planking, use a clean brush to clean any off the planking surface, you may need to reshake the bottle a few time while doing a large deck. Use q-tips to soak up any excess Turpenoid as the pigments settle and start to dry. Allow to dry a day or two then seal with clear acrylic.
What you just made is called a pinwash.
