Cleaning files?

What's the best way to get rid of of caked on model filler, resin etc. on fine metal files? For plastic I just heat up the metal and then swipe it off with a wet cloth. I've tried this with dried filler etc. but it doesn't work. Any suggestions please?

There are file brushes made for these purposes. One side is a fiber brush, the other little metal teeth for heavy cleaning. I use one with a generous dosing of isopropyl alcohol to get out the gunk.

A brass or steel file brush with oil applied to the face of the file is what I use. The oil helps float debris off (particularly metal fililngs), and serves as a rust inhibitor.
