Richard Worth (Tiornu) and I have published a new book - Raising the Red Banner: A Pictorial History of Stalin's Fleet 1920-1945. The book covers the development of the Red Navy from right after post Civil War to the end of WWII. It has over 240 photos as well as the explanations and characteristics of each major class of Soviet Warships. It can be found on almost every amazon other than the US one (not sure why):

Thanks for that I'll be ordering my copy as it complements Jurg Meister's "Soviet Warships of the Second World War" and MG Sanders 1959 publication "The Soviet Navy" This must be a long awaited publication for those with an interest in Russian Naval History and the beginnings of the Soviet navy in particular. I must confess I've been toying with an idea for some time of attempting a book on Soviet warships from a modeller�s perspective. Although not intended for modellers John Jordan�s "Soviet Warships� remains one of the best that can be used by modellers as a reference work. But it's the absence of structural detailing and the function and form of the fittings that seems to generate some of the problems as well as those from a modelling perspective. Perhaps it is in this area that such a publication may be helpful. Just an idea, any one been on a Kirov lately ?

Sounds like an interesting book. I'll put it on my list of must buys for 2008.

On my last visit to Russia in the late 90s I came home with a collection of photos from the Central Navy Museum in St. Petersburgh. My subject was the Italian built Destroyer Tashkent.
I was amazed at the quality and detail of the photos I was able to find. Of course a Russian friend did the research for me, which always helps.

In any case, if this new book has drawn photos from the Central Navy Museum in St. Petersburgh, I can give it my highest recommendation. You will be amazed at the detail and quality! My Tashkent photos would just about allow me to add the rivets in proper order to a large scale model of Tashkent.

Buy the way, for Italian warship fans, the Tashkent is a wonderful example of Italian warship construction. She also had a light AA armament fitted by the Soviets that would have been the envy of any destroyer captain of that time. The ship gave good war service before the inevitable loss to Luftwaffe attacks.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out why it's not on any of the US sites as well. Richard handles the communication with the publisher, he plans to ask them whether there are any plans to sell them in the US. I'll let you guys know.

Now that i think about it i still need to pick up a copy of Wooleys book as well... I love how i can tell people that glance through it that i know the author (of course will a smug look on my face) ... I plan to do the same with this book as well (but don't get me wrong, i'll read it too! haha, it sounds interesting - especially since i'm considering doing one of my thesis on the buildup of the russian navy)

I would really like to purchase a copy, too, but as of this evening it's still not available in the US as far as I can tell. It is on UK Amazon, but isn't in stock and indicates availability in 3-5 weeks.

There were some delays in printing due to the fact that Spellmount (the publisher) was acquired by some other company, but the book is being printed and and is in stock on amazon.co.uk. There are plans to sell it in US through Trafalgar books, but not sure when it will happen.

Received my copy yesterday, a good deal through Amazon at the moment in the UK and as it isn't Amazon itself this time it actually arrived.

First impressions are very good indeed, some very interesting photos with close ups always of great value to the modeller and best of all it makes me want to dig out those soviet ships.
