Thinning Lacquer

Dear All,

Could you please share your experience of making matte coat (Lacquer) by airbrush. I am specifically interested in proportion of thinner and lacquer.

I use "Revell No. 2 Clear" matte coat and dilute it approx. 50/50 with thinner. When airbrushing a painted surface for the first time I get some whitish effect on paint - looks like a spider-web and giving an urge to take it off by hand/brush immediately.

At first I was afraid it ruin all my pain job. After some 2-3 minutes I tried to airbrush it again and then received very good (in my humble judgement) coated surface. Whitish effect disappeared.

Is it normal to have this whitish spiderweb? What is right propotion of thinner? Is it the same with gloss coat (thinner proportion)?

I too use Revell varnish,airbrushed.I use a LOT,and often,so have some experience with the stuff.I use a 50:50 mix of varnish/cellulose ( called laquer in the US I think) thinners.It can go white sometimes,but keep coats light and airbrush moving,lowish air pressure and adjust spray with trigger/distance.
Be aware that thinning satin and gloss varnish can change their properties-satin is more matt like,and gloss becomes satin!!

I just needed to here someone using the same stuff as me and to know whether you have the same effects. What a great relief to hear that effects I have are normal.

I will try to use your advise as to distance/pressure.

Also thanks for tips on gloss/satin lacquer.
