Russian submarines threatening undersea network of internet cables, says UK defence chief Sir Tony Radakin

Sat., January 8, 2022, 12:12 a.m.2 min read

The head of Britain's armed forces is warning Russian submarines are threatening a crucial network of underwater cables that carry information around the world.
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, who was appointed chief of the defence staff in October, said the undersea cables that transmit internet data are "the world's real information system".
Any attempt to damage them could be considered an "act of war", he added.
Sir Tony - a former head of the Royal Navy - told The Times newspaper there had been a "phenomenal increase in Russian submarine and underwater activity" in the last 20 years.

What's new ?

The USN has boasted about tapping undersea cables - if it is good enough for the USN, surely it is o.k. for the Soviet navy - or are the western navies just being hypocrites ?

Phil,

You are comparing apples to oranges. The USN and former Soviet Navy "Tapped" into underwater COMMUNICATION cables, land cables, over the airwaves transmissions for Intel not to disable them. Both (and other countries like the UK) had a VESTED interest in NOT cutting or letting anyone know they were "listening". What the UK Defence Chief seems to be saying, is that the RUSSIAN NAVY is NOW threatening to CUT underwater cables as an act of sabotage. With the worldwide reliance on the INTERNET today (not something in existence when the SOVIET NAVY existed) for commerce, financial, and information exchange would be a major problem. If the US wanted to "cut" the internet off, it would be easier to just pull the plug on land.

And the USN advertising that it could tap communication cables was worse than just sabotaging cables. First it showed that the USN could cut cables (what supposedly is so bad about the Russians now), but it also showed that they had the technology to actually tap them.

Amazing what double standards the west has.

Phillip,

Please ... your Soviet Love is so outdated.

The Russians are playing bully and want to intimidate the west before they invade Ukraine. But, if and when they start cutting cables and people's internet favorites aren't available, all hell will breakout on Social Media.

Looks like they would need to cut a LOT of cables however. This graphic dates from 2017, but shows something like 400 + cables are laid around the world's oceans. Not many cables go to Mother Russia.
