get it started!
has anyone experience with the trumpeter 1:144 seawolf?
i thought i`ll do one as an intermezzo when i`m fed up with wisconsin in 1:700
want to waterline it and have a revell"magic flight" f-18 flying across
so any advise about this kit would be welcome!

Waterline might be a great way to do it as the kit has some shape problems. The bow, propulsor, and stern diving planes are incorrect, from what I've heard. I've got the kit and will be buying these plans my next paycheck to see exactly what the problems are, but if you do it waterline you get to not worry about it

Ya i wish i knew about this site before i got the 1:144 Seawolf from Trump, the hull didnt want to fit together very well at all. It looks pretty nice as a waterline though.Tracy White wrote:Waterline might be a great way to do it as the kit has some shape problems. Re: Calling all USS Seawolf class (SSN-21) fans
Hi Guys,
I picked up the 1/350 Bronco Seawolf Class Attack Submarine a while back and am wondering what colors it should be painted ? I have heard that it is based on trumpeter's 1/144 scale kit & has some errors , but i'm building it OOB !I don't think the painting instructions are correct as the say Engine grey uppers & hull red lowers . Most pics i've seen show what looks like overall black or dark grey . Thanks for any help in this matter.
Thanks
JOEY

Here is a picture of Connecticut:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08002205.jpg
You should be safe with painting your Seawolf in a few shades of black/dark grey, with the slightly lighter colour for the below-waterline portion.

Does anyone know anything about the upcoming Dragon 1/350 Seawolf?
And also, how's the accuracy on the 1/700 Hobby Boss Seawolf and Jimmy Carter?

Re: Calling all USS Seawolf class (SSN-21) fans
Does anyone have good references on the leading edge of the sail, as well as the lookout deck? Also, compared with the plans mentioned by Tracy, the kit's bow is too tapered, and the kit propulser has the screw aft of the strakes, while the plan as the screw in front of the strakes. Any reliable source on this?

Tom, they can't email you if you don't post your email or are not signed in Email me as I have some information on the propulsor, which looks nothing like the Trumpeter kit. Also have some close up photos of the Jimmy Carter that I took at the commissioning ceremony, and some photos from the commissioning book.
It worked this time........wow (last in same tone as used by Ben Stein)

Re: Calling all USS Seawolf class (SSN-21) fans
One of the other things I've noticed from photos on the web, is that the top deck is black, while the area between the deck and the anti-oxidation red is a dark gray (FS equivalent?) Were the horizontal and dorsal tailplanes also gray or with gray areas, or were they black? Was the sonar dome completely black, and if so, how far aft did the black extend? In some cases, looking closely at differences in the sheen of the black towards the bow, it's almost as if they duct-taped black trash bags over the bow.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I can't help with any FS equivalents, but what you're seeing are two different textures. The deck or walkway area(s) are painted with a non-skid black paint which has a rough sand in it for traction. This area is re-painted more often than the rest of the hull and may appear more new or fresh.
I can't say, for sure, that the two colors that you're seeing are the exact same paint colors, or not.
I have seen a lot of model SSN/SSBNs here and a lot of the finishes (although not identical) are very believable.
p.s. I served on five submarines in the USN.

Re: Calling all USS Seawolf class (SSN-21) fans
Horrido,
I hope that others will chime in, here, and that you study other models.
I haven't built any SSN/SSBN models in a long time, and I didn't pay attention to the realism. They were mostly for momentos on the shelf.
But, I'd think that a flat clear coat over most of the hull and gloss clear coat over the non-skid, might show this effect. Assuming that both are originally painted the same color.
I wonder if Pactra's Grimy Black would make an adequate color.

Re: Calling all USS Seawolf class (SSN-21) fans
I'd probably go with a "NATO" black, "scale" black, "grimy" black, or even "gunship gray" if that's the case. I'm just trying to pin down if there's an actual color difference, a textural or reflective difference from a non-skid surface as you mentioned, or if it's just an optical illusion captured by the camera. The previous two images do show a color difference at the 3 and 4 foot indicators on the bow, which makes me curious about the "why".
Are there any drydock photos of the Seawolf finally painted/finished before launch?
