Calling all Kursk (Oscar II class) fans

Post by brandon »

Hello

Today I have received a present of my wife. I got the USSR kit Kursk of Revell. When looking into the drawing I have some remarks.

Was the Kursk indeed above the waterline very dark red, had she under the waterline a aluminium colored dome? The equipemnt on the tower like persicope, radar etc was this silver colored and gold colored??

I hope that somebody have a website for me so I can have a look or did somebody build this model and will be able to sent me some pics??

Thanks and regards

Hello Brandon, not exactly a good kit I'm affraid, but probably it's correctable!
First things first, she has TWO lower rudders and one top rudder. Not one lower rudder as the model (and actually most models) depict.

Furthermore she had two 7 bladed skew propellors with a strange vortex attenuator at the end. Don't think the kit has those right either.

Here are some recent pics of her after the salvage operation. It's possible that she was red on the lower half before, she's been a year on the bottom as you know. Apart from that, they switch colour schemes pretty often, so it's possible that she was red before and afterwards received a different colour.
The silver dome is pictured quite a few times on models, yet the latest Russian subs don't really have it anymore. The sonar dome was probably slightly lighter red.

Furthermore you should have a look at "Wayne's Russian Submarine section" of the http://www.subpirates.com board. There are more pictures of Oscars.
