Calling all IJN Mogami-class (最上) fans

This is Tamiya's 1/700 IJN Mikuma and is my second IJN cruiser. It is painted with ModelMaster Acryl paints; Earth Red (FSN: 30117) for the linoleum decks and Maizuru Naval Arsenal Grey for the vertical surfaces and non-tiled horizontal surfaces.

- For photoetch, I used the GMM IJN Cruiser/Destroyer set, Lion Roar IJN Catapults and GMM Gold Plus IJN Ultra-Fine Rails for the main deck railing. Some portions of the masts were replaced with bronze rod and the masts on the turrets are made from bronze rod.

- The flag is from the GGM's flag decal set. The rigging is Dai-Riki 8x monofilament line with a light black wash applied.

- Instead of waiting to apply the photo-etch until building was complete, I added some photo-etch during the superstructure build up. The Ultra-Fine Railing is fairly easy to work with but is much less forgiving for klutzy hand movements.

This kit was given to me by my kids a few years ago as a birthday present. I just got the whim to put it together OOB (except for the searchlight towers port and starboard of the funnel. I could not deal with the kit-supplied ones... I know, I know, a little PE here, a little PE there...

The kit goes together quite nicely... well, like... a Tamiya kit does. Very straight forward and no bull. Here's what she looks like:

Well... I'm not a huge IJN guy. I have a few kits. But, really, I'm more of a RN/USN ship guy. So, I have tons of references for RN/USN and very few for IJN. So, I decided to build it OOB so I could enjoy it without stressing about everything not being perfectly correct or accurate.

It really was a fun build and a nice model. I'll have to build it again with all the bells and wistles - - - - or maybe not. I have too many kits in my stash....

Hi Guys,

I have a small problem. I'm currently starting the preparations to build my 1:350 Tamiya Mogami with LionRoar. Additional I make some lights under the Flight Deck. I found already a lot of photos and sources what was on the flightdeck, but nothing what was on the main deck under the flight deck. Even the Tamiya kit shows nothing except 2 stairs. Has anybody a picture or a plan about the details on this deck?

There's a planset in Gakken # 38 on the Mogami class. As far as I can tell, the # 4 barbette was retained, and there may have been a structure built around the # 5 barbette (maybe a munitions elevator to the magazine?). Aside from that, everything else looks to be columns and trusses to support the flight deck.

Yes. IIRC, AA control postion/level added on top, wind baffles, improved AA platform in front.

What is a wind baffle? What does it look like?

Wind baffles deflects wind away from windows and open bridge positions, makes these positions more comfortable and keep the noise levels in those positions down.

Hello everyone.
I would like to ask how accurate is Tamiya's Kumano with 155mm/60-cal guns. In particular the main mast and the Superstracture.Im asking that cause I have spare 20 cm/50 guns. Is there any changes from Kumano 1938 period to a 1941 (beside the mainguns). Also the Superstracture is the same as Suzuya in the model, so I guess if there is a difference in the Superstracture in late 30's (while the cruisers still got the 155mm/60-cal guns) the particular model dosent depict that. In conclusion I fear that the Kumano's Superstracture is actually not the one he had in the 30's (when she had the 55mm/60-cal guns).

According to L&W, additional changes were minor:

Upgrading the catapults from Kure Type 2 to Type 5
Adapting the TT launchers to handle Type 93 Long Lance from the previous Type 90 torpedoes
Increasing the total TT capacity to 24 units
Placing a torpedo control station in the formast.

So according to this we have to make from zero Kure Type 2 catapults and modify the mainmast, as Kumano from Tamiya really looks like she was after 1940's even if Tamiya offers it with 155mm/60-cal guns(later 30's). I wonder if the 1/350 Mikuma wich Tamiya offers it in the same period has those details.

Catapults were changed from Kure Type 2 Mod 3 to Mod 5. Length is the same, only capacity was upgraded. No easily identifiable visible change.

Foremast, not mainmast had the addition. The torpedo control station looks like a literally tub, or sterotypical crow's nest, right on the very top on the of the structure. Very easy to scratchbuild.

This should be a very straightforward conversion.
