MOSCOW, 14 April. /TASS/. The cruiser "Moskva" of the Black Sea Fleet was seriously damaged as a result of detonation of ammunition that occurred as a result of a fire, the crew was evacuated. This was reported in the Russian Defense Ministry.

"As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the Moskva missile cruiser. The ship was seriously damaged. The crew was completely evacuated," the military department said.

The ministry said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Moskva is the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the lead ship of Project 1164 Atlant. It was put into operation in 1983 under the name "Glory". In 1996, the cruiser received its current name. The main strike armament of the ship is 16 P-1000 Vulkan missile launchers.

In the second half of 2015, the cruiser headed the permanent task force of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea, where it covered the Russian Khmeimim airbase in Syria with its air defense systems. On July 22, 2016, the cruiser Moskva was awarded the Order of Nakhimov.

There's some reports that it was sunk because of the damage, but I can't confirm that claim.

Ukraine war: Russia admits Black Sea Fleet flagship is in flames as Ukraine claims missile attack

Wed, April 13, 2022, 5:27 p.m.3 min read

Russia has admitted that the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet - the Moskva - was in flames on Thursday, with Ukraine claiming to have hit it with missiles.
Russia's defence ministry said the Moskva missile cruiser had been badly damaged after ammunition on board was blown up by the fire.
In comments reported by Tass news agency, the ministry said: "As a result of a fire on the Moskva missile cruiser, ammunition detonated."
The crew, believed to number around 500, were all saved, they added.
The statement did not say what had caused the initial fire, saying it was under investigation.
Ukrainian officials said the 12,500 tonne ship had been hit by two anti-ship missiles.
There was no evidence provided for this, but Odesa's governor Maksim Marchenko said on Telegram: "It has been confirmed that the missile cruiser Moscow today went exactly where it was sent by our border guards on Snake Island!

Reuters reporting April 14, 2022 6:32 AM MDT:

Russia says fire on the Moskva missile cruiser is contained

April 14 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said on Thursday that sailors had contained a fire on board the Moskva missile cruiser, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, and that measures were being taken to tow it back to port.

The ministry, which said the blaze broke out after ammunition blew up on board, said the cruiser's main weaponry had not been damaged and that its crew had been evacuated onto other ships in the Black Sea.

"The source of the blaze on the Moskva cruiser has been contained," the ministry said in a statement, adding that the vessel remained afloat. "The explosions of ammunition have stopped."

It said it was still trying to establish the cause of the incident.

The Moskva has officially sunk. The Defense Ministry says it happened while trying to tow it back to harbor due to damage suffered by the hull during a storm.

That must have been quite a storm to batter the hull of this large cruiser so badly that it sank. Lovely ship, I wish I could feel sorry for its owner.

The storm season must have come to its full strength (3 Bft or so the last 24 hrs), down from the Ukraine into the Black Sea. :heh: :heh: :heh:

Anyway, a nice model, Kometa!
For the ship itself I wouldn't give a penny...

It didn't have to be all that intense. If there were holes in the hull from the earlier damage, the waves only had to be high enough to flood through them. Without power for the pumps, the flooding would have progressively pulled the holes closer to the waterline and then under, so the flooding continued unabated until she finally lacked enough buoyancy to stay afloat.

I was joking of course, but the quote from the Russian MoD does not mention any earlier damage to the hull, just that the hull suffered damage due to the storm.

Naturally, I am inclined to believe that the Ukrainians sank the ship, but it is also possible she was lost due to gross incompetence in damage control after a fire.

The fact that the Russians have moved their other ships further from the shoreline would tend to support the Ukrainian version of the story.

This was a old ship so I would say it may not have been able to stand 2 Neptune missle hits according to the Ukrainians.

Someone pointed out we are lucky the Russians didn't say the Cruiser has been converted to a submarine!

other bad days for the Black Sea Fleet:

29 Oct 1955 the old Battleship Novorossiisk ex Giulio Cesare sank after exploding a old German WW II mine 609 KIA see Warship 2007

6 Oct 1943 the Destroyer Leader Kharkov and destroyers Sposobnyi and Besposhchandyi sunk by Ju-87s of III/Stg 3 of 903 crew on all 3 ships only 176 were saved

20th October 1916 was not great either. Dreadnought Battleship Imperatritsa Mariya blew up and sank in Sevastopol due to a magazine explosion, taking 228 sailors with her.

A serious embarrassment for Russia.

Not sure which is worse? Being sunk by your own poor ammunition handling or being sunk by Ukrainian missiles?

None of the explanations offered look remotely good for Russia.
